Malcolm Block
Editor The Michigan Daily:- ,
It is not surprising that there
should be a great deal of discussion
as to the cause of our unsuccessful
season in football. Some of the com-
ments show more vigor than knowl-
edge of the situation.
One of the most common explana-
tions is the ineligibility of a consid-
erable number of men of 'Varsity cal-
ibre. The faculty appears generally
to be blamed for this ineligibility. In
this morning's Daily, for instance, I
note that "Midhigan Rooter" suggests
than; there 'should be adjustments in
the eligibility standards so that men
might be able to take part in inter-
collegiate athletics and also carry
their.:college work. He points out,
what is no doubt true, the difficulty
under which a football player labors
during the season in carrying his col-
lege work.
Your )correspondent neglected to ac-
quaint himself. with the fact that
there is not a single man on the cam-
pus kept out of football , cordipetition
this fall by reason of scholastic defi-
ciencies incurred during a semester
while he was playing football. I have
been connected with the administra-
tion of eligibility rules for a number'
of years and I hate always been
struck by the remarkable fact that
football players do not become inelig-
ible by reason of deficiencies incur-
red during the first semester. It is
during the second semester that a"
very large majority of the men who.
become ineligible fall down in their
work. This is something over which
we may very well. ponder.
