University Ave. kard St. kI Of 17 black degrees and 3 copying Doormen have been stationed at Union entrances recently in order to keep non-members out of the build- ing. Violation of the house rule, which forbids any one to use the building except meibers, has caus'ed this step. to be taken by Union officials. Lately a great many people, who are not members and who could never be- come members, have visited the, build- ing at all hours, causing much incon- venience to the members and officials. Consequently, the doormen have been empowered to stop any one and to re- quest him to show a membership card.' Doorkeeper Will Know Ken George Huley, general secretary, stated that within a few days the door- keepers will know members who use the building often. When he has been on the job a little longer, he will prob- ably speak to many of the men, stated Hurley. The house rule passed by the execu- tive committee upon the matter.,is: "Members must show their member- ship cards or otherwise establish their identity if requested to do so by the doorman. This rule is made for self- evident -reasons and members should not be offended if asked to show their cards." "We want to .ask the co-operation of every student member in, enforcing. this rule," stated Hurley. "In the end it will benefit the student, for he will receive the service which 'would go to the outsider. Showing one's card should not offend any one, for it should be a privilege to be a member of the Union, as it is a thing which not any one can become and the use of a mem- bership card is the way to make this possible." W omen To Use the Side Door a Women who use the building must enter by the side entrance, as they will not be allowed to go into the Union by the main door. Even then they must be accompanied by a. member or must shoW a guest card. The only parts of the building in which women will be permitted is the assembly hall on Fri-, day and Saturday nights, the tap room between 11 and 12 o'clock on Friday and Saturday nights, the ladies' dining" room, the'women's reception room, and one society room, which is 316. When the house committee meets, it is probable, that a time will be set aside when members may show wo- men through the entire building. ABSENCES MUST BE REPORTED TO CONNITTEE WITHIN TWO WEEKS Any student who does not report his absences to the attendance committee within two weeks of their occurrence is assumed by the registrar's office either to be unable to offer an. excuse or else without a desire to do so, said Registrar Arthur G. Hall, Friday in ex- plaining attendance rules. Punishment Given At the end of the semester., according to Registrar Hall, a list is made of those having an undue number of ab- sences unexcused, and punishment usually consists of declaring the stu- dent ineligible for student activities. This is simply a verbal order and is not sent to the student's parents. In more severe cases the penalty imposed is to put the student on actual probation, and' final punishment is to deduct credit, as was done in some cases last semester. "The matter of deducting credit de- pends largely on the student", said Registrar Hall. "In the case ofa poor student, the punishment for absences, is simply combined with that for low scholarship. There may be no other way to get at a good student, how- ever, than by one of these punishments, and we occasionally have had to deduct credit from A and B students. "Every student has a double duty to perform, as he should explain his absences to the University and to his instructors" Must Explain Absences The rules now governing absences are as follows: All absences should' be explained to the committee on attendance within one week. Every absence not ex/ plained withiji two weeks will be marked unexcused. Absences pending adjustment for more than one week wil be marked unexeused. Each absence on the day immedi- ately preceding or following .a vacation or holiday shall be counted as three. Excessive absence shall render the student liable to prohibition from par- ticipation in public activities or to a reduction in general credit for the semester. Willful disregard of summons from the attendance committee or the dean shall render the offender liable to suspension.
