Both the Crimson crews have studied the water. and wind conditions on the west side, *of the lake, where the contest will take place. Iowa State-Students of the Iowa State College voted decidedly in favor of a Student Union building as a fitting memorial for the 103 Ames men who died in the service. Of the 2,771 actu- ally counted students enrolled 'in the various colleges, 2,295 qualified votes were cast, or a percentage of the en- tire school of over 82.5 per cent. Ourator of Miuseum Heads Trip; Pur- pose to Learn About Country's Wilds An expedition under the direction 4f Prof. A. G. Ruthven, curator of the museum of zoology and Prof. F. M. Gaige of the museum, left for Colombia on May 16. The purpose of the expedition is to gather some accurate information con- cerning the wild life of the hitherto practically unexplored wilds of Co- lombia. Skins for mounting will be secured and an elaborate outfit is being taken for photographic purposes. Natives will be obtained and the out- fit will traverse the Santa Marta moun- tains of Colombia with a mule train. The professors do not expect to re- turn before next August. The work of this expedition will connect up the work of former expeditions on either side of it, one of theim now being car- ried on in Venezuela. All work on the new University hos- pital will cease in a few days if new material 'does not arrive. Many stu- dents from the 'university have been laboring at excavation work on Satur- days, and during the spring vacation more than 50 took advantage of this opportunity to make some extra money. Asked as to whether the students measured up well as laborers, Super- intendent Tessier remarked that they worked like veterans, notwithstanding 'the sudden change from books to pick and shovel, and that he would be glad to give jobs to any who would like to work on Saturdays or on any other days that they might desire. This, of course, is dependent upon the arrival of new material. It was also stated that students were using the two large 200-foot conveying towers as observation towers and ini- tiation apparatus. An extra watchman has been placed on duty with instruc- tions to fire, if necessary, upon persons found climbing these towers. R.
