THE UNION SHOW Thursday night the first Union movie will be put on in Hill auditorium accompanied by a short pro- gram of musical numbers. The Union, in securing this picture after it had once been shown in Ann Arbor, was able to get it at a' very reduced rate and consequently has been able to handle the produc- tion at a very nominal price. There may come a time when Union movies will be .produced once a month, or even oftener, with musical numbers by members of the Union and the Union orchestra. There are a number of large films released by leading companies which are never shown in Ann Arbor and some of ,these releases could probably be secured by the Union. In addition to the moving pictures,. there is the' Union orchestra, which has been practicing for some time under the direction of Earl Moore. One of the complaints frequently heard regarding local moving picture houses is the poor quality and small quantity of music furnished. There should be ma-. terial enough in a University this size to form an ex- cellent orchestra, and Mr. Moore has made an ef- fort to bring it out and round it into shape, believ- ing that a high class. orchestra would be a'real as- set to the school. The rest of the entertainnent offered i all of the best, and for the price greater satisfaction could riot be insured. COLLEGE FRIENDSHIPS It is the consensus of opinion of all college gradu- ates that the friendships and associations which are formed during years in the university are the strongest and most binding ties of later life. A com- mon bond seems to link ustogether inseparably. We realize more and mpre as time goes on that these friendships are not mere temporal affairs, soon to be forgotten, but things with a meaning for all time. Had we not known certain, pepple something would have been, missing, something great and strong. College is rather a, formative period. Mol- ten metal is poured into molds to be turned, out as more or less base material. The friends which we make during this period have been compared to the alloy~s with which the metal has been mixed. They have as great an influence upon our lives, later as well as while in the university, as an alloy has to the metal with whsich it is fused. True friendship is, in the opinions of many, un- attainable. This belief is not founded upon fact. The spirit of Damon and Pythias is ngt dead. There are still men in the world to whom friend- ship is more than mere association. To these men it means, readiness to sacrifice everything for its sake; and to them it comes, as it should, before everything. TWO STORES. Baker has just returned from- a scientific expedition in Vene- zuela, South America, where he rep- resented the University museum in obtaining an excellent collection o' 8,000 snails and 350 reptiles and am- phibians. Among the other members of the party were E. B. Williams, probably the biggest amateur collector of dra- gon flies in the United States, and Jesse Williams, head of the secret service in the Newberry case. Professor Baker declared that the expedition was successful in spite of an unusually dry season. A arge number of new specimens were secur- ed among which were several un- known to science. The sanitary conditions were ex- tremely bad, all of the party having frequent attacks of'malaria. Food con- sisted mostly of cooked bananas and coffee with the occasional addition of goat meat for variety. In speaking of the trip, Professor Baker said, "The country has both the advantages of beautiful scenery in its' mountains and dense forests, and a rich, productive soil in the valleys. Practically all of the coast line is a .desert, a fact which is not generally connected with South America." SENIOR WINS.REPUBLICAN PLATFORM CONTEST PRIZE U El !
