Engineering News
Prof. John C. Parker of the elec-
trical engilneering department, will
address the Fort Wayne section of the
American Institute of Electrical Eng-
ineers tonight in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Professor Parker recently drew up a
resolution advocating a longer course
in engineering schools which was
adopted by the institute, and it is in
connection with this that he is to.

try-outs held their first get-together
of the term Wednesday evening in the
Engineering society rooms.
Junior engineers will hold their
first assembly at 8 o'clock Thursday
morning, Oct. 16, in room 348. Nom-
inations for class officers and class

The fatal action of the laws of
heredity is brought out wvividly in
"The Avalanche," which will be shown
at the Majestic for the last times to-
day, when the heroine, who has been
brought up in a monastary, suddenly{
abandons everything dear to her to
become a gambler.
In addition to the regular program,
the Goodyear style show, with its
large display of women's finery and
living, models, will "appearfor the last
time today.
Mary Pickjord's latest release, "The
hoodlum," will be presented for three
days beginning Sunday.

Its Woman"

About 150 citizens of Ann Arbor,
Ypsilanti, and Washtenaw county, in-
cluding the Ann Arbor board of super-
visors and editors of all newspapers
in the county, were guests of the
Rotary clubs of the two cities at a
dinner Wednesday night at the -Union.
The purpose of the affairs was to pro-
mote a better spirit of comradeship
between the people of th'i cities and
the surrounding country.
The Cook Spring company, a Npw
York corporation manufacturing
springs and metal goods of all kinds,
has purchased. the old Newton-Hag-
gerty Ladder company property near
Ferry field and will improve the build-
ings and install equipment for a com-
plete plant, employing a force of 300.
men.
The new factory will be one of the
largest plants in Ann Arbor. At pre-
sent the company's main office' and
factory is in New York, but it is in-
tended eventually to move the entire
property here.
Alumni Visit Ann Arbor Over Week
Charles P. Emery, '18, of Jackson,
Lindle Hughes, '17, and Dr. Harry Ren-
nel, 18, both of Detroit, spent the
week end at the Sigma Phi Epsilon
house.

UNION
On account of the mass meeting
Tuesdaynight, only a short lesson
was held at the beginners' class in
the Old Union; tonight, thereore, will
be the first regular lasson of' the
course. The first lesson of the ad-
vanced class will be next Monday

Clara Kimball Young will appear at
the Arcade today and tomorrow in
"The Better Wife." The story deals
with a young American girl who makes
the acquaiftance of an English bar-
ohet and his family. She immediately
falls in love with the Englishman's lit-
tle boy and when the lad's mother is
killed in an automobile accident, she
nurses him back to health.
Although the baronet grows to love
her, he refrains from mentioning it out
of respect for his dead wife's mem-
ory. But when he discovers that sie
was not as worthy of his love as he
had thought, he marries the American
girl, who proves to be the "better
wife."

Howe travel festival, to be presented
