The New York'slugger connected with a trio of homers in two days and has five cir- cuit drives to his credit, according to averages completed today. The averages include games of Wednes- day. Major league baseball this spring has been marked 'from the start by poor team play and the exceptional in- dividual work of the pastime's stars. Detroit's record-breaker of 13 con- secutive defeats for an opener is only a little ahead of others whose names are near the bottom of' the lists, and even the leader# in both leagues are weighed down Ty heavy tallies in the "loss" column. People no longer go to the games to see the home team win, - which it probably won't -, but to see the ,performance of, the in- dividukl player whoafor the moment is considered the stellar light of that team. Cleveland Leads At present Cleveland heads the American league, and Boston the Na- tional, but except for natives of those towns this bears little significance when compared with the fact that Babe Ruth is astonishing thebasebalf world with his conistancy at hitting home runs, or that Johnston, of Cleve- land, recently gained first place among American league hitters, and Nichol- son, of Pittsburg, leads the percentage lists in the Nationals.' Poor start attained by most of those previously pitked as pennant-contend- ers has been largely attributed to the unusually trying weather conditions which attended the southern training season and the first few' weeks of play, but there seems to be little' or no excuse for these unfortunates to stay at the bottom of the ladder now that summer is actually here. Their low average has, however, turned the public eye to personal successes to a far greater degree than usual, and the fame of Ruth and some of his lesser contemporaries may be partially ac- counted for in this way. At any rate, those at present ppminent would cer- tainly'be less noticable in a constantly winning team than they are where their companion players are of sufi- ciently inferior quality to constitute a losing aggregation. Cincinnati, world's champions, now lead the National league, with a com- fortable margin over the Boston Braves, who are in second place. Nich- olson, Pittsburg outfielder, has run up a mark of .445 in 12 games, with Rog- ers Hornsby, sensational St. Louis short stop, trailing him with .414.
