"The policy of the United States
will be to have a real merchnt mar-
ine of her own," said Prof. Herbert
C. Sadler head of the department of
marine engineering, in his address
to freshmen engineers yesterday
morning.
"The shipping industry was just in
its infancy before the war. From one,
million tons this country raised to
eight million tons of ships, in practic-
ally a year's time. The industry has'
come to stay."
Naval Tank Helpful
Professor Sadler pointed out that,
in order to study the design of hulls'
and machinery for floating structures,
a seaboard location is unnecessary.
"The University of Michigan naval
tank makes possible the testing of
models, which, is satisfactory, can be
duplicated in practical ships," he
said.
The professor characterized the field
6f marine engineering as' one con-
cerned primarily with the design of
floating structures, which must be
able to carry a cargo, with the neces-
sary machinery for propulasion, in
safety. "This profession includes alp.
most all the other branches of engin-
eering, one might say, and in addi-
tion, the added problem of unusual
stresses and strains, for the medium
of transportation, water, cannot be
reckoned with definitely," he went on.

In conculsion Professor Sadler ad-
vised students to minimize the credit,
