It will provide the medium of personal contact between the Presi- dent and Senate of the University and the student body through the individ- ual male student which has long been provided for the women of the Uni- versity with such .admirable results. PLAN PROPOSED BY UNIVERSITY SENATE TO HAVE DEAN OF MEN (Continued from Page One) tee only as an officer or member of an organization. "Such a mode of relationship and contact in an institution founded upon democratic ideals is, to say the least, unfortunate, for it is manifest to the eye of experience that the individual who merges his identity in an organi- zation insofar loses his responsiveness to the appeal of human sympathy and reasonableness. As John Smith a stu- dent can be reached by a Senate offi- cial: as Editor of The Daily or Man- ager of the Comedy club, he becomes an impersonal embodiment of a sys- tem of traditions and prejudices which may be totally at variance with his better nature, but which,;nevertheless, he jealously and stubbornly upholds. It is hopeless to expect a thoroughly successful administration of student life from a system of control that ad- mits of contact only between com- mittees of the faculty and student or- ganizations. "It is with this principle in mind, and, further, in the conviction that the years following the great war are likely .to prove a critical time in the .growth of the University that this com- mittee recommends the creation of the office of Dean of Men. The need of such an official has already been felt by the state universities to which we are nearest akin, namely, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa. The gain to accrue to our academic life from the appointment of a Dean of Men may be roughly indicated under the fol- lowing heads: "1. It will relieve the deans of the several schools and colleges of a large part of the burden of detailed work with students leaving them freer to exercise their functions as deans of the faculties. Many other members of the Senate who ge much time to administrative work will be similarly relieved. "2. It will conduce to uniformity of policy in the matters of discipline U-NOTICES Band Bounce tickets go on sale today at Graham's and Wahr's book stores. r -'i L U 1 .
