STATISTICS SHOW MICHIGAN INDIANS ARE YET NUMEROUS WHAPIS GOING ON Many Believe Redskins Many in Land Now as er Years Ik Number as In Form- Victor Records by Homer and de Cogorza h he la.rtest se t' -."N quaihUj poed"'in the world Recent enumerations show about 100,000 Indians in Canada and 300,- 000 inthe United States. Of this large number in the United States, 6,333 are located in Michigan. The L'Anse and Vieux Desert Chippewas number about 668 of those in Michigan and are under the care of a government phy- sician. The remaining scattered Chip- pewas are living on Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron,, under no government head. A still fewer number of Pottawat- tomies of Huron remain in a little settlement near Lake Huron. These Indians have died out very rapidly, owing to their poor housing conditions. They now number about 78. Because of the apparently small number of Indians left, one would think that they are rapidly decreasing but on the contrary, their tendency is to increase. There is no evidence to prove that the country was ever very thickly populated with Indians, and many believe that there are just as many now as ever.
