THE MICHIGAN [)AILY ANNA FITZIU tO SING AS MAR.GUERITE LIN FAUST At the Metropolitan opera house, Anna Fitziu who sings the role of Marguerite in "Faust," Saturday even- ing, May 17, in Hill auditorium, re- cently introduced the "Goyescas" of Granados and was recognized as America's leading interpreter of Spanish music. It has become a tradition among modern composers to seek the per- sonality of Miss Fitziu for the creation of new and important roles. In Italy Montemezzi honored her in "L'Amore dei tre Re," the most significant opera of the present century, while the vet- eran, Mancinelli, selected her as the heroine of his "Paola and Frances- ca." Last season the title role of Henry Hadley's "Azora" was entrusted to her. Miss Fitziu's singing and act- ig were the main features of its pre- miere both in Chicago and New York. Before the war broke out Miss Fitziu had won an enviable reputation in Europe. Within a few months after her return to her native country she had become a member of the Metro- politan Opera house, later touring the musical centers of both North and South America. The various royalties have showered gifts upon her, among the most priz- ed of which is a gold, jeweled brooch surmounted by the crown in brilliants pinned upon the corsage of her gown by Victoria, queen of Spain. She has sung for the soldiers in France in the trenches and has con- certized upon various occasions for the benefit of the Allied soldiers.
