ThGH1 SCHOOL FRENCH
SHOWSUNUSUAL GAIN
Statistics never before published
been compiled by Prof. Arthur
G. Canfield of the French department
to show the phenomenal increase in
French courses in high schools
throughout the state.
Many Drop German
There were 14 high schools offer-
ing courses in French, German, and
Spanish last year. In these schools
German has been dropped in all but
three, leaving the French and Span-
ish courses. In 26, where both Ger-
man and French were given, the for-
mer subject has been dropped in all
but two. In 14 of these schools Span-
ish has been substituted for the Ger-
man courses.
Last year in 71 schools German was
the only modern language taught, oth-
er than English. Now that study has
been dropped in all but one, French
being substituted in 57, Spanish in
four, both French and Spanish in two,
leaving no modern language offered
save English in seven.
Few G~oad Teachers
Professor Canfield has received nu-
merous letters telling of the adverse
conditions against which state high
schools are working, in regard to se-
curing properly instructed teachers to
meet the increased demand for
French courses. Particualr effort is
being made by the University to pre-
pare adequately more instructors in
order to better the existing poor con-
ditions in the teaching of French
throughout the state.
