AT THE WHITNEY
David Warfield, who comes to the
Whitney on Tuesday, April 8, in "The
Auctioneer," has not only come to be
regarded as one of the leading char-
acter actors on the American stage to-
day, but die also revives memories of
the great character actors of history.
"When speaking of actors," said Mr.
Warfield recently, "how often do we
hear the remark that 'after all, he is
a character actor.' This is not said
altogether disparagingly, but rather
means to imply a division between
character acting and some other kinds.
Now this is not true, because all act-
ing is character acting whether the
impersonation be Macbeth, Hamlet,
Richard III, or some other figure in
the modern drama.
"The deep, human emotion and
quaint personalities of the roles which
Raymond_Herne, and Jefferson made
famous, surely touched the eternal
verities of art as deeply as could any
rendition of Shylock or Macbeth."
AT THE ARCADE
An unusually human and dramatic
photoplay, in spite of its occasional
exaggeration, is "The Belle of New
York," in which Marion Davies ap-
pears for the last times Friday at the
Arcade,
The picture is an adaptation of the
famous stage play and bears the un-
mistakable marks of the popular dra-
ma of the last decade.
Miss Davies portrays the daughter
of an inventor who has been shame-
fully defrauded by an unscrupulous
capitalist. In her music studies in
New York, the heroine unwittingly
comes upon the son of her father's on-
emy and falls in love with hiaL Upon
learning his identity, -she renounces
him, and seeks refuge in a Salvation
Army mission. The young ,man,
meanwhile, has sunk to the depths of
degradation, and it is in this condition
that the daughter of the Salvation
Army finds him. Of course, there is
reform and a happy reconciliation. An
Interesting feature of the production
is the cabaret scenes in which the
famous Ziegfeld Midnight Frolic chor-
us participate.
A return engagement of Geraldine
Farrar in "Shadows" has been book-
