Nicholai Atmen of Perchina, scion of a nobel house and former personal guard of the Czar of all the Russias, was shot and seriously wounded early Thursday morning on Catherine street. The crime was reported to the police department at once, and men are working on -the scanty evidence offered by the case. The bullet, which is believed to have been of 22 calibre, entered Atmen's body just below the lung. It is said that he has a chance for recovery. This is on the authority of the vetin- ary who visits him twice daily. Ah! the secret is out. Atmen is not a, former diplomat and right-hand man of the ex-Czar but a huge white Russ- ian wolf-hound, the former prize-win- ner of the royal kennels. He is worth $2,000 and was presentedeto a local fraternity by an alumnus. At a recent New York dog show he was pronounced thekfinest specimen of the breed in America. He is the same dog that received two write-ups in Detroit newspapers. Why anyone would want to shoot this dog is unknown as he possessed a kind disposition and was absolutely harmless, according to the owners. The theory advanced by the police is tliat some man saw him and immed- iately feared that he would eat up all the canines in the neighborhood. C OF C TAKES UP METER-QUESTION The advisability of Ann Arbor in'- stalling water meters was discussed from every possible Angle at a meet- ing of the Chamber of Commerce water meter committee held Tuesday night in the council rooms of the city hall. In the past there has always been a flat-rate system used in connec- tion with the city's water supply. It was in regards to this old sys- tem, as compared to the water meter type, that the committee was con- cerned. Reports were made on the matter by men familiar with every phase of the subject. Especially important was the report made by those who had had previous experience with the wa- ter meter method. The main point. of business- trans- acted was the appointment of a pub- licity committee, whose principal function will be to make public the reports received by this body. It was decided to formulate a list of ques- tions and answers and have them pub- lished in such a form that they would reach all the people of Ann Arbor interested in this question. "It is not the intention of the Cham- ber of Commerce to prejudice the peo- ple of the city either for or against this question of installing water met- ers. We simply desire to gather facts from men versed on the subject and present them in a readable form for the information of the city at large. The majority ,of citizens cannot give the time necessary to look into such questions thoroughly, and it is for the benefit of these that the water meter committee will publish the facts obtained,' was the statement of C. C. Freeman, chairman of this commit- tee. The private canoe sh ders' Canoe Livery will for some time, due to being done. Opening of published later. Wm. Prop. eds of not be repair same w J.
