They represent the various kinds of books that are to be in the Library. There are in all 10 seals, which are as follows, philosophy and religion, law, earth sciences, physical sciences, med- icine, mathematics and engineering, the fine arts, poetry and music, dra- ma, and history. The work on the seals was done by Ricci, a son of one of the partners of the firm of Donnelly and Ricci, famous New York sculptors. The seal proper is delicately cut and being on the north side of the building, where no direct light can strike, stands forth clearly. The borders, which are deeper than the seals, are highly or- namented. Thy were cut in the Bed- ford, Indiana quarries. These seals are considered the sculp'tor's first work of importance.
