First with Indiana
e first Conference game was with
tua. This proved that Michigan
not playing on her luck and that
Varsity could stand up under the
k of a Conference five. This
resulted in a score of 28 to 22

in Michigan's favor.r
From that time on until the trip
to Chicago and Northwestern took
place the squad were put through the
hardest of practices and drillings.
Chicago was rumored as being the
black horse of the Conference having
at that time a perfect record with
several Conference scalps on her
belt. 'The team was placed at the dis-
advantage of playing on a foreign
floor and was forced to bow down
before the Windy City men. The in-
stallation of glass baseboards in the
strangers' gyms was one of the causes.
for the fall. Accuracy in basket
shooting had not been attained by the
Wolverines to any extent and this.
new type of backboard contributed to
their confusion. The game was lost
by a score of 21 to 13.
The most bitter defeat of the whole
season came the following evening,
when the Maize and Blue quintet lost
the contest with Northwestern by only
one point, 17 to 16. This team was
considered one of the 'fastest in the
Big Ten circuit.
Illinois Wins
Then followed the third Conference
defeat. In an uphill battle Michigan
fell short of overcoming a big lead
acquired by Illinois in the first half
of the initial meeting of these two
quintets and lost 25 to 22.
Two games with service teams, the
Detroit Naval unit and the U. S. Hos-
pital unit, No. 36, followed immedi-
ately and resulted in victories by
overwhelming scores for Michigan. .
The M. A. C. contest when Michigan
won, 19-17, was the first of two in-
teresting games which the Wolverines
had with the Farmers. The Lansing
men were not satisfied until they re-
ceived their revenge later in the sea-
son. Michigan then won from Ohio
State university. This team has been
in the Conference for six years and
has not been able to cinch a place
among the first five teams.

Chicago Game Close
Then followed the second game
with Chicago. The visitors were com-
ing here with a record which was
supposed to be good enough to frighten
any team. They were picked as the
!undisputed champs. It was the sur-
prise which astounded the basketball
world when Michigan scored over 20
points on this team.
M. A. C. then took the revenge for
which she was aching, coming here
and defeating Michigan on the Ann
Arbor floor to the tune of 33-24. This
! game put the team in the fighting
mood for the more important game
with Northwestern the following
night. Perhaps it may be said that
the biggest single achievement of this
year was the victory over North-
western. This game upset the .dope
once more, and again attention was
drawn to the team which held last
place last year but which was doing
such astounding work in 1919.
Win Fourth Place
The final trip south decided Michi-
gan's status for the present season.
In the first game played Ohio was
beaten 23 to 20. The following even-
ing the team went to Urbana, where
they met Illinois on Monday night and
defeated the Suckers 22 to 18, placing
Michigan securely in fourth position.
The final game of the year was
schedule with Indiana to be played
at Bloomington. It was generally be-
lieved, particularly after the two vic-
tories of the preceding days that the
Wolverines would make the trip a
clean sweep. The strange floor and
the strenuousness of the previous bat-
tles were too much for Coach Mitch-
ell's men and the Hoosiers won 24
to 16.
"I am more than satisfied with the
way the team has acquitted them-
selves this season. It was more than
I dared to hope that we would land
in fourth place although I knew that
we would improve ,decidedly over last
year. What pleases me is the fact
that whatever we have done has been
by teamwork and not by the work of
a few stars." This is, all Coach Mitch-
ell had to say
MITCHELL TO COACH FRESH
BASEBALL AGAIN THIS YEAR
Plentiful material is awaiting the
call for the freshman baseball squad.
Coach Mitchell will issue the first call
as soon as the weather conditions per-
mit. Indoor practice is impossible as
the Varsity squad is using the gym
every afternoon.
Several men who were on last year's
freshman team are making'a strong
bid for some of the positions held
by the veterans. Although the fresh-
men are handicapped by the Confer-
ence ruling, which allows no outside
competition, they will have enough
practice with the first team to assure
them a chance to develope team work.
Numerals will be given to the men
who make the team.
Willie Ritchie's sweetie said that
she would marry him if he knocked
out Benny Leonard. So Willie did the
same and won a fight and a home at
one blow.

Coach Farrell announced
Tuesday that trials would be
tonight from 3 to 5:30 o'clock
in the 440 yard dash and 880
yard run. The first four men
place in the 440 will be chosen
for the team in the western Con-
ference meet. Men who can do
2:05 or better in the 880 will
also be chosen. One trial will be
given in each event.
Any man who finds that it is
impossible to tryout this after-
noon may make arrangements
with the coach and have a spec-
ial appointment at which time
he will receive attention.
MICHIGAN VICTORY
ASSURED BY MEETS
Judging from the results of the
track meets last Saturday, Michigan
should have no trouble in cleaning up
the Conference meet at Northwestern
next week. Notre Dame lost to Illi-
nois 44-42 at Notre Dame in a meet
that was not won till the relay had
been taken by the Illini team. Hoar,
who was running the third lap of the
relay for the Catholics, fell down and
the lost ground could not be made up.
Using the same list of events Coach
Farrell's men had no difficulty in win-
ning froi the Indiana team, 63-23.
Chicago, already defeated by Mich-
igan, put the- skids under Northwest-
ern, 49-37, at Patten gym, Saturday.
Gorgas' shot putting, and the sensa-
tional finish of the mile relay were
the feature events. The big Maroon

Using comparative scores as a
basis, none of the Conference teams
have done as Well as Michigan and it
is hard to see how the Maize and Blue

of the points counted on fail to mate-
