Rychener, '20, of Archbold, Ohio, was elected basketball captain for the coming year fat a meet- ing of the quintet to have their pic- tures taken Friday. Rychener succeeds Emery who was ,not here for the greater part of !this season, but who managed to return in time to win an 'M." The new cap- tain has played for tWo years on the Varsity and this winter held down the position of running guard. His good work on numerous occasions was the biggest factor in winning games. Rychener has the ability to hit the basket from the center of the floor and succeeded in winnig the Illinois game by five beautiful ringers from the middle regions. He is also a strong guard and covers the entire court. Farrell Working Track Men Hard Coach Farrell is - letting slip no chance to better the team ,in prepa- xration for the Conference meet March 21 and 22. Waterman gymansium has been the scene of strenuous work on the part of the track and field squad. Smith, Baker and Lindstrom have been indulging in daily workouts in the pit with the 16 pound shot for the last few days. There is noletup in the coach's effort to get the best possi- ble results from the husky weight heavers, as points in this are very es- sential to winning the meet. Walls has added several inches to his putt ting in the Chicago gymansium and is one of the most dependable men in this event. Michigan's sprint trio, Johnson, Cook and Losch, in an effort to pre- serve the form that has twice taken triple wins in stiff competition, have done a great deal of work in the short dash. Many of the points taken by the Maize and Blue team in the two meets IMPORTANT All-Fresh track meet will be held in Waterman gym at 2:30 o'clock, Saturday. All entrants be there at that time. Sedgwick Makes Good Time this Captain Sedgwick led the distance men around the track in a couple Qf speedy races including the half and the mile. Though defeated by Mc- Cosh last week Sedgwick is depended on for a place in the mile at North- western. There are very few runners in the West that can best the stellar Michigan' captain in a distance race when points are needed. Bouma and Walker are gaining power in the mile and are expected to show form against the Conference teams in this event. Schofield and Messner have been timed in several fast 440 yard dashes. These two men are among those that have just entered school and have not been out in uniform long. Their pres- ent speed indicates a reorganized re- lay team for the Conference meet. The relay four has been rather inexperi- enced this year and therefore not quite up to the usual standard of previous springs. The advent of the numerous veteran has strengthened the team in the place most needing new power, the relay and middle distances. In the last few days all tryouts for the quarter in preparation for the form- ing of the relay team were sent over the distance to gain .atnew line on the ability of the men out. 440 Men Look (904d Butler and Buell are looking better than at any time before this year in their events. Over a fast track these men are the equal of any middle dis- tance runners in the Conference, and this ability should be apparent on the Purple track, which is one of the speediest in the West. Westbrook, the sophomore who has been doing so well this season, has been clearing 11 feet consistently, and can add several inches more when necessary. Cross as usual has been going from 11 feet 3 to 11 feet % every time out. The showing thus far made by Cross a14 Westprook mkes them choices for first and second in any Conference meet. OutfieldersN McGowen Ferguson Boicep Garmanh Corcorane Cooper . Langenhan Johnss Perrin Usher Hammels WILLIAMS HONORED BY CHICAGO COACHt Coach Page of the University of Chicago five has picked three Confer-s ence basketball teams. Williams thec star Michigan gaurd, has received a position on the second quintet. He isv tae only Wolverine to be placed on any of the teams by the Chicago men- tor. SENIOR WOMEN WIN FROM JUNIORS; SCORE 32 TO 18 Women basketball enthusiasts who were confident of a junior victory had their hopes smashed by the sensa- tional playing of Jane Duemling, se- nior forward, whose 10 field goals went a long way toward defeating the juniors 32 to 18, Friday afternoon in Barbour gymnasium. The playing of the entire senior team was swift and clean but credit falls chiefly upon the two forwards who tossed basket after basket with ap- parent ease. The juniors put up a hard and steady fight through the entire game. Dorothy Jones, whose wonderful play- ing in the "odd-even" contest created such a sensation, seemed entirely off form; while the other forward, Edna Daskam, was almost completely handi- capped by a guard twie her heighth. Seniors will battle with the fresh- nen for the basketball trophy on Wed- nesday, March 19. Lieut Joe Jenkins of the Chicago White Socks now in Germany, expects to return by April 1. Forty men have turned out for base- ball practice at Dart mot. ATTENTION STUDENTS--101 stu- dents are going to earn $60 00 per week this summer selling Fuller Brushes. IN DIAMONDRACTIC sQUD GR IDUALLY INCRFASES IN NUMBER O MEN Batt ingand fielding practice is in ull swing in the big net inside Wat- rman gymnasium with the big staff ) hurlers throwing to the batters for in hour each afternoon. Scheidler, Parks, and Lemp are do- ng the majority of the pitching ut Kinmball and Crockett are gradually assuming a share of the burden. Bob Glenni is going a bit easy as yet as his ri is not known to be in first-class shape and- the coach does not wish to lose the only man on the staff with a great deal of experience. Cohn has reported and is doing a great deal of the catching. With Cohn, Huber, Hayes and Schluntz to take turns little difficulty will be found in making a start in the receiving end of the team, but there is still much room for ambitious backstops. At least three more are really needed by the coach in order to select a good staff. " Adamus Out for First Adams, Conference choice for the initial sack job last year, and Bower- man, hurt early in the season, are the men of Varsity experience who are out for the first base position. Hatch and Novak show a great deal of ability in fielding practice and in batting. Garrett, Pheney, and Labadie com- pose the second sack candidates that have shown Varsity form in the aft- ernoon practices. Garrett loks to be as good as last year which will make him a hard man to displace, he is scooping up the grounders well and his batting is excellent. Knode Fielding Well Mike Knode is fielding the surest of any of the candidates now in action. With Van Boven, out for short, and Froemke, Anderson, and Howard, the third basemen, he completes a fast bunch of infielders. The outfielders list continues to swell, though very little can be told of the various men till outdoor work- outs begin. Batting is the big thing for the garden aspirants to master while the team is inside the net.
