NO CATCHERS IS
LUNDGREN'S WORRY
Indoor practice of the 1919 baseball
squad which was regularly estab-
lished with the return of Coach Lund-
gten has assumed a more definite
aspect. Everything is running smooth-
ly with the exception of the deficiency
in number of candidates reporting
daily, especially the number of try-
outs for the backstop post.
Both Coach Lundgren and Captain
Knode emphasize the need for more
catchers and state that the opportun-
ity is particularly good for men who
can perform behind the bat.
The pitching staff which has been
busy for some time warming up, is
rounding. into shape and at present
forms one of the strong features of
the squad.
Wednesday's drill consisted of a.
light workout for everyone, giving the.
slab men further chance to loosen up
their arms and the late comers a
gradual initiation int6 training. Bat-
ting practice will commence next wek
at which all candidates will be ex-
pected to report.
More freshmen are needed out
for track. Not enough pep is
being shown by the class of '22.
Remember the freshman track
meet will be held March 15, and
the winners of these events will
be given a chance to compete
out doors later in the spring.
Numerals may be given to the
men who try out all season.
EIGHT C HOSEN TO
.MAKE BASKET TRIP
Coach Elmer Mitchell has picked
seven of the eight men to be taken on
the final basketball trip this week-
end. The Northwestern victory was
the last home game of the season and
only three teams remain on the Maize
and Blue schedule.
Practice Wednesday and Thursday
nights will be used a as basis for the
.election of the player to complete
the squad: Hewlett, Karpus, Mcelin-
tock, Rychener, Williams, Wilson and
Emery have already been definitely
decided upon.

fastest kind 'of basketball will beat
them. However, Coach Mitchell con-
WASHED fidently expects to repeat the defeat
handed out last month.

in Urbana against Illinois. This game

trip, but Michigan will play all the

Fourteen Wolverine track men will
leaye with Coach Farrell at 1:16{
o'clock Thursday afternoon on the
Michigan Central for the dual n feet
to be held with Chicago 'on Friday
night.
Johnson, Cook, and Losch who took
the first three places in the 50 yard
dash against Notre Dame last Satur-
day, are slated to appear in the 40
yard sprint against the Maxoons.
Johnson is counted on for his usual
place at the head of the list and both
of the other Maize and Blue sprintexs
are looked to for points.
Johinson Alone In Hlurdles
Johnson is also listed as Michigan's
single entry in both the 40 yard high
hurdles and the running high jump.
Although impeded somewhat by min-
or injuries received earlier in the sea-
son, the versatile track star has been
hitting a good stride and is expected
to make his unsupported appearance
prove significant.
Coach Farrell will use a triple en-.
try in the 440 consisting of Meese, But-
ler, and Messner. Butler of the 192~
All-Fresh and winner of the event last.
Saturday needs no introduction
Meese and Messner have been going
strong and complete the able trio.
The 880 will allow Larson and Buell
to help out the total score. These
men have been running consistently,.
and the Wolverine end of this event
should receive proper attention.
Sedgwick Should Win
Sedgwick and Walker will represent
the team in the mile and from former
exhibitions, the cinder captain is pre-
dicted to hold his own.
Pat Smith and Walls will compete in
the shot put. Although the big weight
man and former football captain was
nosed out by Gilfillan in. the Niotre
Dame meet, he added a first in, the
1917 Conference games at Champaign
and can be relied on for points in. the
WESTON SUFFERED
INJURY IN FALL'
Archie B. Weston, '1iE, Yost's lit-
tle wonder quarter-back of the 1917
season, broke his hand in a fall Mon-
day night.
It was dark and Weston in his
hurry did not notice an iron railing
in his way and spilled over it, hitting
his hand against the bar as he fell.
He picked himself up and at the time
thought nothing of it but before morn-
ing the pain became so great that he
realized that he had done more than
sprain his wrist.
Tuesday morning Weston had an
X-ray taken, which showed up several
broken bones in the back of his hand,
The injury was serious in that it made
bad fractures, but the setting was sat-
isfactory and Weston hopes to be able
to take off the splints in a few weeks.
4The fall of 1917 was Weston's first
season on the Varsity football team.
When Cliff Sparks' injured knee put
him out of the game after the second
contest, Yost put Weston in as quart-
er-back. His spectacular work in that
position and his open field running
puts him in the class with Michigan's
best.
