Bates, of the Law school, ex- pressed recently in an interview with a representative of the Detroit Free+ Press. "What we sincerely want to see in, the German people," said Dean Bates, "is an honest conviction that their im- perialistic policies of the past few dec- ades are fundainnentally wrong from every point of view." Dean Bates sees danger for the Urnited States if the people overlook this basic fact, and consider the execution of the kaiser as atonement for the sins of the en- tire German nation. "My own, point of view," continued Dean Bates, "is that this case cannot be settled by rule of thumb, nor can any specific precedent of law be re- sorted to. They only legal method of dealing with the case is to apply gen- eral principles and analogies."
