; 29, 1919. THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE THRI BASKETBLL IVE DUE FOR EASY WORK SPELL COACH FEELS QUINTET MERITS LET UP FROM MLONG GRINI) Easy workouts are going to be the main thing on the program for Var- sity basketball practices this week. Coach Mitchell has decided that the greatest need of the team now is a letting up from scrimmage, and giving the squad a chance to rest. The whole' quintet* has been working hard for weeks without any relaxation. Each man has been forced to put forth his utmost to keep his berth and the strain was beginning to tell. However, the time of competition for positions having passed for the most- part, 'things have settled down to where steadier and more consistent basketball can be drilled into the-five, and while none of the 12 now carried on the Varsity squad have been form- ally selected as regulars, or any oth- e 's definitely appointed substitutes, still, certain of the squad by virtue of their repeated entrance into every big game have earned what is con- ceded by all a regular position. (Rame Tonight A game tonight with a team rpere- senting United States General Hospital No. 36, will probably be the hardest practice that the squad will be given this week. Nothing can be learned about the hospital team that will al- low any prophecy as to the outcome of the game but it is expected that the Maize and Blue team will experience no difficulty in securing a victory. Preparation for the battle with the University of Illinois is what is oc- cupying the attention of the coach now. He says that the teams ought to line up about evenly. Illinois was rated at the first of the season as the probable winner of the Conference (Continued on Page Four) k A RC A D E CHICAGO QUINTET LEAD0S CONFERE:NCE Michigan Falls' Before )ouble Defeat and Drops Into Second Division MINNESOTA SHARES PERFECT AVERAGE WITH MAROON SQUAD Hoosiers Lose Second Game of Week; Illinois 'Team Continues Un- steady Conference basketball during the past week has been' marked by the steady hold on ;the lead maintained by Chicago and Minnesota, and' by the drop of Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. Northwestern and Purdue improved themselves slightly, and Iowa broke even. Ohio State and Wisconsin did not play Big Ten teams. The real feature was the continued unsteadiness shown by Illinois. This veteran aggregation fell decisively be- fore Minnesota, suggesting that thede- feat by Purdue was not such an acci- dent as it seemed. Feature Star Centers The. Gophers and the Maroons are busy setting a strenuous pace for each other; neither team has lost a game. Both fives illustrate the value of a moderate number of veterans coupled with a little new blood. But each of them has that pearl, a real center. Gorgas is not quite the scorer that Kingsley' is, but as a defensive man he has t]Ae Minnesotan excelled. The season is still young. Illin- ois may come back, and Purdue is in an excellent position to threaten. But a three game lead at this stage in- dicates real strength, and the followers of Chicago and Minnesota may be al- lowed a little optimism. Indiana Falls -Again Indiana had an unfortunate week, having followed her Michigan defeat with another at the hands of Iowa. The latter, however, fell before Pur- due. Michigan had a disastrous visit in Chicago, but the showing made there leaves plenty of confidence that she will vastly improve her position before the season closes. COOK AND JOHNSON DISPLAY SPEED IN PRACTICE DASHES Track workouts are beginning to show the old time life and pep. The various squads are turning out in larger numbers and the whole pro- gram is speeding up as the time for the first meets approaches. Bob Cook is displaying good form and promises to come up to all ex- pectations as one of Michigan's point winners in the dash events. Cook broke into the competition sprints yes- terday for the first time this season. Carl Johnson was out yesterday aft- ernoon, warming up, and in two or three heats nosed out Cook and Nash to the string. Johnson will undoubt- edly be able to uphold his past record in the Conference this spring, the dope being that he will carry two firsts in at least two events. Pitcher Kicks on Terms of Contract Scott Perry, star of Connie Mack's team, goes on record as being the first to register a protest on the terms of his contract. The question again aris- es concerning the worth of a first class pitcher. *If it were not for Mack, Perry might still be driving a truck, and on the other hand Scott was the only attraction that brought the fans out to see the Athletics play. There are arguments on either side. To Start Tour with Baltimore Scrap Chicago, Jan. 28.- Pal Moore, the conqueror of the sensational Jimmy Wilde, left for Baltimore tonight on the first leg of what his managers, Nate Lewis and Tommy Walsh, call his "victory tour." He battles Young McGovern there and has a heavy string of tilts in the East and Middle West after which he goes to England to fight a return match with Wilde for a big purse. West Virginia to Meet Princeton Morgantown, W. Va., Jan. 28.-West Virginia university will play its first game with one of the Big Three when the Mountaineers meet the Princeton eleven this fall. Patronize our advertisers.-Adv. Coach H. F. Rowley's All-Fresh basketball team will play a prelim- ary game before the Michigan-Gen- eral Hospital No. 36 encounter Wed- nesday night, Jan. 29. Coach Row-3 ley has not as yet, decided upon a definite line-up but has announced the following probable team to start: forwards, Westbrook and Raye; center, Dunne; guards, Merkel and Peare. Others of the squad will be sent in before the end of the game. The opposing team, the "Has-Beens,", is composed of several men prom- inent in Varsity athletics and cam- pus affairs. Cooper and Cruze will play forwards; Olbhmacher, center; Cartwright, Reininger, Stringer and Lowe, guards. Mitchell Coaching Yearlings Coach Mitchell of the Varsity basketball squad has been directing the affairs of the first year men for the past few days as Rowley has been out of town. To develop speed and teamwork several fast practice games have been played by the four teams now in action. Wednesday or Thursday Rowley will pick the eight memebrs of the 1922 Fresh basketball team. The task of selecting this team is made very difficult as nearly every man of the many now turning out is worthy, of serious consideration. Much will depend on the playing of the vari- ous men in the preliminary Wed- nesday night. Only the necessity of working .with a small group forces Rowley to choose his team. Individuals to Get Attention The All-Fresh is really working toward Varsity basketball next yea'f and the year after, so with the pres- ent large squad it is impossible to give each man the attention needed to develop his best game. The men not chosen this year should not be discouraged as failure to make the first year teams does not spoil an athletic career. Many of Michigan's good athletes have not been picked ! on their freshman teams. In choosing 'his team Rowley will consider the following men: West- brook, Raye, Burkhardt, Mdilstr6p, Rannel, forwards, Dunne and Mason, centers, Walsson, Barney, Creno, Al- len, Merkel, and Peare, guards. Oth- ers will have a chance but these play- ers have been showing the best bas- ketball throughout the season and will come in for first choice. Team Standing Decided by Tourney A mat tournament was held at the University of Pennsylvania Monday to decide the team positions.
