PT. WILFRED WILSON ENTHU-
SIASTIC OVER BRIGHT
PROSPECTS
'The outlook is bright that the
rsity band this year will be better
.n ever," said Captain Wilfred Wil-
lof the band yesterday. He stat-
that the men who are trying out
positions this year are showing
re ability than he has seen in try-
s since he became director.
'here were about 110 men who
ed out for the Varsity band this
ir. Only 60 positions were to be
ed. There have been three re-
arsals thus far, and the weekly
ctices will be continued until the
d of the first semester.
Has 45 Old Varsity Men
At the first rehearsal in thesecond
semester, the names of those who
will have places in the band will be
announced. . Captain Wilson estimates
that he will have 45 old Varsity men
this year. Last year there were a
number of promising first year men
who were ineligible. These candi-
dates came out this year, and, to-
gether with the old Varsity men, will
form a band which will be better than
ever, according to Captain Wilson.
The members of the band will re-
ceive a stipend of $25 from the Uni-
versity, and they will be given a cer-
tain sum by the Athletic association
to go towards paying expenses *hen
trips are made with teams. If there
is a deficit, the shortage will be
made up by giving concerts or en-
tertainments.
Good Spirit Shown
Captain Wilson is very hopeful of
what this year's Varsity will do. The

material is very good, and the men
exhibit a splendid spirit. They feel
that the student body is back of them,
and they therefore respond by keeping
the band up to Michigan standards.
This, according to Captain Wilson, is
the secret of the success of the Var-
sity band. The men are showing
great interest in the work, and with
the spirit of co-operation that exists,
Captain Wilson states their goal will
be to make the Varsity the equal of
any travelling band.
Professors Hunt
In Sciense Wilds
Meow! M-e-ow! ! M-e-e-e-o-o-o-
o-w !!
"What's that unearthly yell?" asked
a gray-haired professor of his assist-
ant.
"Oh, some cat outside, I guess, the
assistant replied.
M-e-e-e-e-e-e-o-o-o- -o-O-w! !?! !
"That noise is in the building!"
ejaculated the professor as he slam-
med down a book, grabbed his assist-
ant, hurled open the door, and look-
ed down the long dark corridor on
the fourth floor of the Natural Sci-
ence building.
Cats to the right of them. Cats to
the left of them. Cats in front of
them, hissing and yelling at the top
of their voices. There were, in all,
30 cats, and they were roaming at
large on all floors of the building.
The janitor was summoned, who al-
so found some meat in the refriger-
ator, and after distributing the small
particles of meat to the fearless fe-
line exterminators, the cat hunt com-
menced, with the aid of the profes-
sors.
After two hours of "Kitty, kitty,
pussy, nice pussy, come take some
meat," on the part of the bold war-
riors, the cat casualties numbered
one.
Away in the small hours of the
morning the roundup continued.
Whether or not the Natural Science
cat tamers obtained the entire allot-
ment of felines, which were consign-
ed to the zoological department from
the Grand Rapids pound, is not
known. But, it has been astertain-
ed by students that there was not
the slightest trace of a cat in the
building the following day.
LESSER ATHLETICS
TO BEGIN SHORTLY
Boxing, wrestling, handball, and
other minor sports will not be start-
ed until the begining of the second
semester, Director Philip G. Bartelme
stated yesterday. For the next few
weeks most of the men on the cam-
pus, especially those who have lost
time with influenza and the S. A. T.
C., will want to concentrate on their
studies, with as few distractions as
possible.

What is a virtuous wife? Anita
Stewart, starring in the role of Amy
Forrester, acts the answer in "Virtu-
ous Wives," adapted from Owen
Johnson's novel by that name. It will
appear the forepart of this week.
Amy's determination, however, of
what is required by the term "virtu-
ous" is'brought about only after great
danger to her .own and her friends'
domestic happiness. The plot is not
risque, but merely interprets and ap-
plies civilization's greatest problem-
marriage.
The screening of this picture marks
Miss Stewart's return to motion pic-
tures after several months' absence.
George Stewart, her brother, has his
first "speaking" part in motion pic-
tures in this production. The rest of
the staff includes Edwin Arden, Mrs.
DeWolf Hopper, Conway Tearle, and
William Boyd.
