Instead, to protect its build- ings and those adjacent from fire, the University maintains a complete de- partment which co-operates with the local one in extinguishing campus fires.= This department is manned by employes of the buildings and grounds department. Since the early days of the col- lege, the campus fire department has been a well organized institution. To- day record time is made in reaching fires and the department's good repu- tation is still maintained. Complete Organization By a system of siren signals fires on any part of the campus are lo- cated. The department then leave their work immediately and hurry to the fire where they report to the cap- talus of their various sections. Beside ladder, axe, and hose men, there are utility, police, and salvaging crews. To avoid confusion in obeying or- ders, the chief of the department and crew captains wear white coats. Aides to captains wear black ones with a white circle on the breast handdrawn hose carts. A quantity of hose is also kept in the buildings and grounds department. In the bse- ment of the mechanical engineering laboratory there are two high press- ure pumps, one steam, the other elec- trically driven.
