Holiday Suggestions

Only a few days more and Christ-
mas vacation will be here. Everyone
is, or should be, making plans for
holiday celebration. Store windows
are full of gay color and suggestions
of the cheer that is coming for one
of the most joyful Christmases the
world has seen. Students are plan-
ning to celebrate it to the full; re-
strictions and discomforts of military
life will be forgotten, worry as to the
future is no longer their chief occu-
pation, and the boys are coming
home.
War-time lessons of good sense in
buying cannot be forgotten, but there
is a great revival of interest in those
things which do not sustain life, but
which, paradoxically, make it sup-
portable. A wave of relaxation is
spreading over the country and when
the freer spending which it produc-
es does not cause less free sharing,
it does no harm. The only place a
year ago for any man's money was in
agencies which were winning the war
or maintaining the essentials of ci-
vilian life at home. But now fellow-
ship and generosity and good cheer

are felt to be legitimate commodi-
ties and the American people will in-
vest heavily in them.
Ann Arbor merchants are strong
supporters of all forms of student ac-
tivities. Enterprises of all sorts, en-
tertainments, and publications' par
ticularly, would be impossible with-
out their financial support and co-
operation. Beside the attitude of help-
fulness which they maintain during
peace times, they have taken active
part in all student patriotic cam-
paigns. The student body owes some-
thing to this group of men. And
moreover it is to the students' own
interest to recognize this debt.
In Christmas buying whether of
presents or glad raiment, the wise
student is he who spends his money
in Ann Arbor. Unless he happens to
live in a large city he will not find
as great a choice at home and no-
where will he meet with more relia-
ble business houses. A university
town attracts the best in this as in
other lines.
