'T N E MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGU MAN BASKETBALL 1TET NOW ASSURED VETERANS EXPECTED TO RETURN WHEN DISCHARGED FROM SERVICE An all-freshman basketball tedm i now assured according to Coach Mitchell of the Varsity quintet, last night. With an abundance ofrfreshman material, and with some strong prac- tice opposition needed for the Varsity quintet, the freshman team will be a valuable asset. According to the coach, it will be organized shortly aft- er vacation. Small Squad Meanwhile, he is working the Var- sity men, although few in number, into shape for the coming season. With only about a dozen men to pick from, and but one veteran about whom to build the team, Mitchell is hoping for some of the veterans who have been in the service to return to save the day. There are possibilities of bringing back Emery, the captain and star for- ward of the last season, to the school. Emery has been stationed at a naval1 aviation training school. Rychener, a gaurd and McClintoch, center, of the last season Varsity are also expected back. Both men will make valuable additions to the squad. Practice at High School The workouts are being held at the high school gymnasium, pending the repairing of Waterman gymnasium. High sc1ool and Varsity practices havesbeensworked together, that the two squads might give each other practice on the floor at the same time. A series of practice games will pro- bably be arranged for immediately aft- er vacation, the coach said last night, with the view of rounding the team into shape for the big games. The quintet will be called back from vaca- tion early, that their practice may con- tinue with the least possible interrup- tion. Reception for All Foreign Students The reception to be given at 8 o'clock Thursday night in Barbour gymnasium by President Harry B. Hutchins and the Deans is for all for- eign students, not for the Cosmopoli- tan club as was previously announc- ed in the Daily. There will be about 180 foreign students who represent 32 different countries. PRE-CHRISTMAS SALE Our entire stock of Winter Hats will be closed out regardless of cost. Stevens & Pershing 618 Packard MAROON WRITERS HONOR WOLVERINES Now comes the Chicago University writers with their selection of an all conference team. Michigan, appar- ently has made some impression upon them, for despite the defeat at the hands of the Wolverines, the Maroon writer has placed two Michigan men on his mythical eleven. Steketee and Goetz, who figured in the scoring of the day, are the only two men chosen by the Chicago crit- ics. All they have apparently figured on, is the scoring in the contest, for theykhave overlooked the defensive work of Vick, who was considered the all around star of the Maroon contest. To Illinois, he gives three places, one going to Ingwerson, Fletcher, and Kilpatrick, each. Even one of his own team is numbered on the eleven, namely, Captain Elton. Despite the fact that both Cohn and Perrin ran rings around the Maroon man, Elton was given one of the back positions. RUSSIAN PIANIST TO PLAY SATURDAY Serge Prokofieff, the young Russian pianist, whose appearances in New York and Chicago have excited such enthusiasm among musicians, is to appear in Hill auditorium Saturday, Dec. 14, in place of Leopold Godow- sky, who is unable to fill his engage- ment. Between the ages of five and 13 years of age he produced five com- positions. In 1903 he entered the Pet- rograd conservatory and studied the piano under Russian masters, graduat- ing with honors and winning the Rub- instein prize. During this period his work as a composer was prolific as he produced more than 100 pieces, including sym- phonies, sonatas, and works for piano. Conspicuous among these are his: "Madalena," "Sinfonietta," "Dreams," and "Poeme d'automne." His first concerto for piano was written in 1911 and produced the following year in Moscow and Petrograd, where he himself performed the solo part. He has also performed in Rome. Every male student in the University, civilian as well as military, is required to re-enroll with the secretary of his school or college immediately beginning with Wednesday, Dec. 11. Start- ing with this date, civilian stu- dents should re-register at once, S. A. T. C. men as soon as dis- charged, naval unit men as soon as released. Discharge and re- lease papers should be brought and exhibited. This is needed because the demobilization of the S. A. T. C. and the releasing of thenaval unit men necessitates a change in status and address and a set- tlement of fees among most of the men students. SHIRLEY W. SMITH, Secretary of the University.
