P. om my own experiences and ob- tions overseas, I would say that ,ps the most satisfactory fash- i which Americans may express affection for, and sympathy that wonderfully steadfast, brave e, the French, is by giving to the fund for the support of French war- orphans. "When one thinks that the contri- bution of 10 cents a day brings com- fort-yes,erhaps life Itself-to a child made fatherless in the war for liberty and decency, one is astonished that there are not millions of regular supporters of this beautiful charity in our own land. "And the French babies are such bonny barns-such bright, winsome, polite, mannerly little people that if you could only see them as I have seen them, cheerful in their dismal surroundings on the edge of the des- olated areas, going clothed in rags, playing with makeshift toys of wood and rags in the ruins of their homes and all so gratefully appreciative of a kindly word from an American, I am' sure that each one of you who reads this would lose no / time in adopting as many of.these waror- phAns as you could afford--and then a few more on top of that."
