THE MICHIGAN DAILY F MICHIGAN BOOUSTS ILLINOIS CONTEST Sacker State Team Holds Four Con- forence Victories, Claiming Big Ten Title WOLVRINES ARE FAVORITES AMONQ EASTERN CRITICS: Ferry FP1.l Suggested as Loglo . Plae for Gam, ad Dee. 7 Plok. .d as Date Michigan is in the running for the championship of the Conference ac- cording to the admission of the fore- most candidates for the place, them- selves. Word from Champaign, regarding the claim of the Illinois university varsity to the honor, says that the Sucker state team is "itching to meet Michigan." Thus, despite their four victories over Conference elevens, they are ready to recognize the strength of the Wolverine squad, as tested by the Syracuse and M. A. C. games. Date a Puzzle But the problem. of properly ar- ranging a date for the game confronts the athletic officials of both univer- sities. Illinois demands that the Michigan date with Ohio State, this Saturday, be cancelled, in their favor, but Athletic Director Bartelme, refus- ing to break one of the traditions of his office, has declined this sugges- tion. Coach Zupke of the Illinois team, it is said, fears to allow his team to keep out of action for two weeks, claim- ing that it would break down the strength of his men. For this reason, he fears to meet the Yostmen at a lat- ter date. Michigan fans regard this as cam- ouflage, however, expressing the opin- ion that the Illinois evelen is backing down. They seem to forget that the Wolverine squad, help up for five weeks, because of the flu, came back with three straight victories, one against the strongest team in the East. Yost Anxious for Game Coach Yost is anxious to get a chance to get a more substantial claim to the Big Ten honors, than merely by winning the Ohio State game Saturday, and is therefore push- ing the Illinois-Michigan fray. Yet he does not want to make final ar- rangements for the contest before the affair with the Buckeyes. "We'll take the itch out of Illinois," says Coach Yost. He promises that the contest will be the best of the year, with the Maize and Blue fight- ing for the highest place in the Big Ten. Then comes another point of fric- tion when Illinois refuses to play THANKSGIVING DAY PRACTICE MICHIGANENSIAN NOTICE No fraternity, sorority, or oth- er organization copy will be ac- cepted for the Michiganensian after Dec. 1. The logical field for a championship game is Fer- ry field in Ann Arbor, not only be- cause it would draw a bigger crowd, but because it is one of the best grid- irons in the country. Illinos Fears Yostmen Summed up, the Illinois team does- n't seem to wish to take a chance with the Yostmen, yet they will risk a game if Michigan is persistent. It will be necessary for military and academic authorities to sanction a post season contest, as the game would have to be played possibly on Dec. 7. Yet as Coach Yost express- es it, it would be but a matter of minutes, for with the war over, and things running smoothly, there is no reason for the contest not being sanc- tioned. Meanwhile, Michigan alumni over the entire country, are anxious for the contest. The University is also be- ginning to ask for it, and with the Ohio State game over, it is very prob- able that the two teams will meet. COACH YOST ANNOUNCS FINAL VASITY SQUAD WOLVERINE FIRST STRING BUNCH COMPOSED OF 6 MEN The Varsity squad for the Univer- sity of Michigan for the season of 1918 was finally announced by Coach Yost last night, when the reserve ele- ment, which was retained on the first string squad, was dropped. At the close ofapractice yesterday, the hurry-up coach announced the 25 men who will constitute the first string bunch for the remainder of the season. Limited Practice Practice was limited to signal drill and a blackboard talk. New plays were drilled into the final Varsity squad, while the intensive signal work was carried on for the practical work connectedwith the plays. Usher, the sophomore who was at an officers' training camp, and who returned to the squad yesterday, is making himself known, as at the very start of the season. With Perrin and Cohn filling the back positions, Usher will find it hard to get into a game. Intensive work for an overwhelm- ing victory against Ohio State Satur- day has already been started, while the proposed Illinois game for the conference championship is also kept in mind. All men who have held first string positions this year have been retain- ed on the squad. The scrubs who were kept for the purpose of scrim- mage work, can feel amply repaid for their work by the trip to Chicago. Th.e entire 38 men on the squad at that time were tken. The Varsity The Varsity is now composed of the following men: Goetz, Cohn, Fortune, Morrison, Knode, Dunne, Vick, Adams, Free- man, Steketee, Perrin, Bovill, Usher, Walker, Genebach, Wilson, Czyz, Kar- pus, Carter, Jordan, Hadden, Hender- shot, Barnes, Cruse, Cartwright, Ol- sen.
