The races on the open-. ing day were well attended, about 300 people being present. The weather was ideal for horse racing. The track was well beaten and the type con-; ducive to record breaking. The first race was won handily by Maxie, owned and driven by Frasier. This race was run the best three out of five -heats, Maxie winning in straight heats. The last heat was by far the most interesting of the day. Miss Gale, driven. by Simpson, got away to a flying start followed close- ly by George Wood, driven by Van Fleet. For the greater part of the distance Maxie was pocketed between these two horses and Miss Gale opened up quite a gap. It seemed almost im- possible for Maxie to win the heat. Approaching the last turn Maxie be- gan to catch the leaders and, guided by the splendid driving of Frasier, quickly regained the lost ground, beat- ing Miss Gale by scarcely two feet. Maxie's best time for the half mile was 1:12 1-4. Third Race Proves Close The third race was the most hotly contested of the three. The lone trot- ter, Pearl Mobile, driven and owned by Van Fleet, appeared to be outclass- ed by the other two horses. The mare appeared to have difficulty in getting away from the wire. In this race the fastest time of the day was established by Hazel Pointer, owned by Mosher of Detr.oit and driv- en by Alec Hassard. Her time for the first heat was 1:11. Fanny J., owned' by Proctor, pressed Hazel Pointer hard at all times, not winning any heat by more than a half length.
