He dashes into his office or into his overalls just as the 8 o'clock whistle blows; he punches thte time clock on the first stroke of 5. His chief effort during the weary hours of the day is in as- suming an attitude of profound in- terest in his work when the boss is making an inspection tour of the time slaves. Th~e intrinsic value of student life comes not from the number of hours spent in mental drudgery, but in the intenseness of the attitude of the stu- dent toward his work. Most of our knowledge sneaks into our brains in those rare moments when we are so intensely interested in what. we are doing that the flight of timk, is ntot no iceable. THE TIME SERVER The student who slavishly follows the university catalogue in the dictum that two hours preparation should precede every class hour is likely to fall into the logical fallacy of assum- ing that because he lolls over a text- book the required number of hours he is entitled to credit in the given course. There are not a few students on the campus who believe, or, at least, assert they do, that if they sit with an open book before them two hours every day for a semester they have earned a university credit. All of us have heard the plea of the bounced: "He had no right to bust mne in that course; I spent more than two hours every day in reading."
