"MOI)E RN 1ST" CLAIS BE LIVIOUS
CREEDSS MAY !NOT BE FORCED ON
STUDENT B(HY.
Editor, The Michigan Daily:
In regard to the protests that have
recently appeared in The Daily against
social events occurring in Holy Week.
One would think that this is not a
country of religious toleration by the
tenor of some of these communica-
tions.
The University is a state institution,
and therefore no one, or few, religious
creeds can be enforced on the student
body. The old idea of certain churches
in observing every sacred day that
comes along is one not to be forced on
other creeds. Let them observe these
days, and the sacrifice which they un-
dergo in refraining from the pleas-
ures of life will be all the more in ac-
cord with their religious beliefs.
The editorial which appeared in The
Daily several days ago is one to be
commended. It is a fact that the
old dogmas must give way to modern
ideas. Look at the decrease in the
number of .days observed now than
were observed but a couple of cen-
turies ago.
The dances occuriting last week cer-
tainly could not have been very in-
sulting to all the Christian students,
if one were to judge by the attend-
ance. And, too, if all those who at-
tended were not Christians then it is
the fault of those at the head of the
c:urch with which they are affiliated,
for not teaching their student members
to resist temptations.
But at least allow us toleration, and
if certain creeds do not believe in lib-
eral and modern ideas let them forbid
their people to attend these censored
social affairs.
MODERNIST.
Women's Gargoyle
Out Friday Noon
Jenilna V. Wenley to Edit Annual Is-
sue of Special "Women's Edition"
From cover to cover, the Women's
number of the Gargoyle, which will be
put on sale at noon Friday, is filled
with rapid-fire wit and humor directed
at the male portion of the campus. It
is said that ere the smoke of the en-
gagement has quite cleared away some
of the most prominent leaders of the
trousered tribe will be discovered dead
or wounded from the fierce Amazonian
fire.
The cover, by an artiste who has
wished to remain anonymous, is print-
ed in red, green and brown, and is
meant to show the close relation be-
tween the "ed" and the "bip-ed", his
Simian ancestor. A well executed fron-
tispiece is by Louise Irish, '18.
One of the most striking of the
features is said to be a professorial
burlesque after the fashion of "Alice
in Wonderland," entitled "Martha
Cooky."
Nor is caustic satire omitted from
the editorial columns of the publica-
tion. Not even the editor of the Gar-
goyle is spared, that gentleman being
dubbed "A babe in arms" by the board
of editors under the leadership of
Jemima V. Wenley, '16.
Other campus lights are expected
to become somewhat dimmed after
their perusal of a series of cartoons
and comments headed, "The Men Who
Think They Put the I's' in Michigan."
