The diminutive in- fielder left the team at Chicago Sun- day and returned to Ann Arbor to seek medical attention for a trouble- some finger.. Smith doesn't know just when his finger received the bump that has put him out of commission, but fears that blood poison may set in. Brandell has been sent to second base in Smith's absence, and the resulting vacancy in the outfield is being filled by Warner. Pitcher John Roberts, who accom- panied Smith back to Ann Arbor, re- ported that the Wolverines enjoyed the hospitality of former Michigan coach Branch Rickey as guests at the Chi- cago-St. Louis set-to in the Windy City Sunday. The game was of special in- terest to the boys as both George Sis- ler and Johnnie Lavan, former Michi- gan players, were constantly in the limelight. Beside the relay squad, Brown, Fon- tana, Griest, O'Brien and Simmons were present at Ferry Field in the regular workouts last week, getting into shape for the dual meets later in the year. SPRING PRACTICE, TO START TODAY Pigskin Rooters Begini Outside Work on Ferry Field; Edimunds as- signs Lockers in Clubhouse YOST EXPECTEI) TO 1E ON HAND Spring football practice is slated to start today on Ferry Field, and word has been received from Coach Yost that he will be on hand to direct the initial workout. All men who have been retained on the winter gymnasium squad are expected to attend the out- door practice regularly, and an invi- lation has also been extended to all who intend to try out for the 1916 gridiron squad. The pigskin followers will report to Assistant Athletic Director Ed- munds at the Ferry Field club house this afternoon from 3:00 o'clock on, to be assigned lockers and football togs. While the coach has not announced his plans for this year's spring train- ing, it is expected that the outdoor sessions will last about two weeks. In past years, the squad has been put through a routine of practice in passing, kicking and plays from for- niation, but Yost may decide to include scrimmage in the spring curriculum. This year's spring training will play an important part in the con- ditioning of the squad from which next year's Wolverine eleven is to come, and co-operation and hard work on the part of the men, even in the face of a hot sun, are the essentials nec- essary to bring about the expected re- sults.
