WAS NOVT A "SLAM" OR "IN SULT." Editor, The Michigan Daily:. I am very sorry that I am unable to answer the communication which appeared yesterday in the same man- ner in which it was written. But it is impossible to answer thoughtless carping and brainless ideas by reason and argument. Your communicant, who is- afraid to state his opinions above his name, and hides behind a mask of anonymity, makes statements which he cannot prove-I mean his explanaton of the fact that "prom- inent Michigan students" do not regu- larly call upon university women; and offers opinions in print which no gentleman would dare utter to the face of another gentleman. I do not propose to use your space in taking yesterday's communication to pieces and showing its author the er- rors of his ways and mental process- es. He holds what seems to be an un- alterable opinion; he calls the edit- orial "Michigan Women" a "slam," an insult, and an outrage. I am very sorry that it should have been taken in a light other than that in which it was written. If your communicant is at all sincere, I will be glad to meet him and discuss this matter with him; I will endeavor to show him, in all itsI minor points, the attitude which the! Gargoyle has chosen to take on the "woman question" at Mic:higan; from the tone which he has taken, how- ever, I am sure that he will not ac- cept this invitation. After all, does not your correspond- ent veritably prove a portion of the very editorial which he attacks with an unpadded hammer? Why has it devolved upon one of the male sex to spring to the defense of the female? If they are taking an active part in3 the various athletic events, and in campus clubs, entertainments, and the like, why have they not taken upon- themselves to give their side of the question? Is your correspondent so intimate with the other sex that he knows their side of the question? Does he feel called upon to act as their mouthpiece? If the women I have talked to on this question are right, then he is making words and no more. If he has given us the women's side of the question, then we owe him our unlimited thanks. I feel certain, however, if he will read the editorial sanely, rationally, and re-{ flect upon it, he will see that it is not all that he claims it to be. W. A. P. Editor, The Michigan Daily: Now that the canoe season is at hand it develops that the management of the U. of M. boat livery has raised the rent price for canoe space - and locker from $6.00 to $11.50, this amount including insurance. It seems to the writer that this is a golden opportunity for the Michigan Boat club to become a real organiza- tion. There are approximately 600 student owned canoes in the boat house at the present time. It is reasonable to suppose that the owners would be willing to appropriate $5.00 apiece toward the building of a stu- dent-controlled boat house. This would mean close to $3,000, for which boat club in fact as well as in name, and would be a long step toward a Varsity crew. If any action were to be taken something would have to be done im- mediately in order that the house would be ready for occupancy not later than the first of May. We would be interested to see what canoe own- ers in general think of the proposi- tion. CANOEIST.
