This musical education was obtained z°g(l from courses in theoretical kmusic elected during his college course and from two years' study in Berlin, where hie studied under Max Bruch andc several other well-known teach- es's. AIr. Cole has spent several years in the field of college work as professor of music, but since 1902, with the ex- ception of two years at Wisconsin, has resided in Chicago as composer, teach- er of composition and theory, and mnu- scal writer. Since 1908 he has held the position of professor (in charge) -Iof music in the Columbia University ' suimmer session in New York City. IAmiong his larger works is a lyrical cantata,, "The Passing of Summer," for solo, (chorus, and orchestra, which was written while he was an under- graduate and was performed in Uni- versity hall on June 27, 1888. The orchestral sketch of the "Sym- phonic Prelude" was begun in April, 1911, and was completed in June of that year. An arrangement of that work was made for organ and in this form it received its first performance. This organ arrangement was published Yin July, 1912, under the title of "Fan- tsaisie Synmphonique," opus 28. This comnposition, as arranged for organ, has been played here once or twice 1by Mr. Earl V. Moore and is probably somewhat familiar to those who have - frequented Mr. Moore's Twilight Or- gan recitals. -and the same holds true of an athletic teamn.
