'HEAACHELESS' DRINS
AGREE WITH CHEMISTS
Professor Hale Reads Paper Before
Chemical Society at Seattle; At-
tends Unique Banquet
Synthetic, non-alcoholic wines and
cocktails, which by their taste and ap-
pearance could hardly be distinguished
from the real beverages, even by a
connoisseur, were a unique feature of
a banquet served to members of the
American Chemical society during its
convention in Seattle, September 1
and 2. Prof. W. J. Hale, of the chem-
istry department, the only represent-'
ative from the University of Michigan
to attend, gave a paper on "The Con-
stitution of the Three Nitro-Alpha-
Carbopyrrolic Acids."
Prohibition takes effect in the State
of Washington January 1, 1916. On'
this account certain fruit products
companies have begun the -manufac-
ture of artificial drinks. The Wash-
ington hotel therefore extended to oneC
of these companies the privilege of
presenting to the chemists their com-
plete repertoire of the best drinks that'
could be served, at a banquet.
Not a drop of alcohol was to be
found in any of the drinks, yet in ap-
pearance, taste and appetizing fea-
tures they far surpassed many of the1
intoxicating beverages offered to the
public today.
In a year the firms manufacturing
these new beverages will ship them+
east of the Mississippi river, the high
transportation rates at present for-i
bidding the sale of the products ex-
cept in the far west.
The next meeting of the American
Chemical society will be held next
spring in Lebanon, Ohio. The regular
meeting will be held in conjunction
with the A. A. A. S. during the Christ-
mas holidays of 1916 in New York City.
