Turks to Surrender Port of Trebizond to Russians; French Losses Total 2,500,000 Paris, Mar. 11.-There was a pro- nounced lull today on the Verdun front to the west of Douaumont. On the left bank of the Meuse there was a violent artillery fire indicating the possibility that the Germans may at- tempt another attack in this sector, but the artillery was the better on the west part of the front, including the sector of the Woevre. No infantry ac- tion was attempted during the day. Further official information, given about the infantry fighting west of Douaumont yesterday, shows that the Germans suffered with extreme sever- ity in the encounter in which they were able to make no appreciable progress. Three attacks were made in all. Each attack was made by four lines of men. The French artillery and machine guns mowed the ranks as they came on, and the ground was covered with German dead. Last night the Germans made two attacks and also -1 empted to cap- ture the Vaux position, but failed un- der the French fire to reach the bar- bed wire entanglements. TO SURRENDER TREBIZOND Petrograd, Mar. 71.-The Turkish port of Trebizond Y rll be surrendered to the Russians with little or no re- sistance, according to dispatches today. The guns in the 'harbor have been dis- mounted and a 1 valuable stores re- moved. The Rt ssian vanguard is now within easy ma rching distance of the city. CAPS, GOWNS AND HOODS for all College Degrees may be ordered now from To Rely on Funston Although General Funston has been instructed to withdraw his forces, as it may appear that Carranza's forces are always ready and able to handle the situation, it was learned tonight that the administration is prepared to rely entirely upon General Funston's discretion in deciding when such with- drawalshall take place. As Funston, in his recommendations to the war department yesterday, ex- pressed profound distrust of every ef- fart on the part of Carranza authorities to take hold of the situation, it is re- garded as unlikely that Funston will accept promises from any of the Car- ranza forces with whom he may come in contact. Anticipating trouble between Car- ranza and the American forces across the border, the war department, it was learned tonight, has taken steps to call, if necessary, on the militia or- ganizations of New York, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, and states along the southern border. This force can enable the employ- ment of the entire cavalry forces of the regular mobile army in Mexico. As the Constitution provides that the National Guard may be subject to call at times "to repel invasion," it was pointed out that no special legislation would be required to use this organ- i ration on patrol duty along the border.
