To Play Four Games Every Night After
Schedule Begins; All Managers
Meet in Gym Tonigh
Regular interclass basketball games
will begin Monday night, February
28, which means that every team will
have to put inits hard licks this week
in order to get ready for the official
grilling to come during the next week.
There will be four games each night,
every night in the week after the offi-
cial schedule has been in effect, mak-
ing 24 games played every week. The
schedule has not been made out yet
but will come out tomorrow, when it
will be mailed to the class managers.
Practice wil continue to be the main
order of procedure for the remainder
of this week, to be held in Waterman
gym from 7:00 o'clock till 9:00 o'clock
every night.
A meeting of all managers will be
held in Waterman gym tonight at 7:30
o'clock promptly. Every manager is
expected -to be there as several im-
portant matters will come up for dis-
cussion, and it is probable that the
schedule will be arranged or the plans
for the chart at least discussed.
Following is the practice schedule
for the remaining days of this week:

The pacifist in the face of the calam-
ity of war is analagous to the ostrich
which proverbially hides his head in
he sand, according to statements made
by the Rev. Frederick Edwards, of St.
Paul's cathedral, Detroit, in his ad-
dress at the annual Washington's
l3irthday exercises of the Law school
yesterday morning in Hill auditorium.
Drawing a comparison between war
and such a calamity as fire, the Rev.
Mr. Edwards said that there were five
alternatives which may be taken by

to an army of 150,000 employees of the New
York Central Lines. The buying power of
these employees contributes in a large part
to the prosperity of the country served by the
Michigan Central R. R.-"The Niagara Falls Route"
But affecting such prosperity in even a greater
measure than this vast disbursement for wages,
together with other great sums for taxes and
supplies, is the maintenance of the high
standard of transportation service necessary to
such growing communities as these lines serve-

a proper relation between earnings
and expenses. In the correct solu-
tion of this problem the public and
the railroads have a mutual interest
-the prosperity of both is at stake.

With at least six months of good,
hard work on the part of the Varsity
gridders, Michigan will stage a come-
back next year without an alibi.
Gym work for the football men will
take place at the same hours as last
semester, and an additional work-out
period will occuy on every Saturday
afternoon in Waterman gymnasium.
It is expected that this time will be
reserved for the exclusive use of the
football men as soon as the track and
baseball men can confine their labors
to Ferry Field.
The following is a list of football
candidates who are expected to re-
port at Waterman gym at the same
hours as were assigned to them last
semester. In case of a conflict, they
must report to the athletic office, and
be assigned to classes.

California Secures Zamloch for Coach
Berkeley, Cal., Feb. 22.--Carl Zamn-
loch, former pitcher for the Detroit
Americans, has been secured to coach

team this spring. Zamloch has en-
tered the university, where he is ta-
ing a course in cartooning.

Handball Aspirants Sign Up This Week
All entries for the handball tourna-
ment must be signed up on the bulle-
tin board at Waterman gym before
March 2, as the drawings for matches
will be held on that day. There will
bra both a singles and a doubles con-
test, and cups will be awarded the
winners in both sections. The tour-
nament begins March 4.
J-Lit Basketball Candidates Will Meet.
There will be a short meeting of
candidates for the J-Lit basketball
team in the trophy room at Water-
man gym tonight at 7:15 o'clock. Prac-
tice will be held immediately after,
the meeting.

FOR RELIGIOUS DISCUSSION'
Discussion groups which will con-
sider problems of vital religious in-
terest to university freshmen will be
organized at the Freshman Supper
which is to be given under the aus-
pices of the Y. M. C. A. at Newberry
hall from 5:45 o'clock to 7:15 o'clock
tonight.
Professor W. D. Henderson, Henry
Rummel, '16L, president of the Stud-
ent Council, and Earl Pinney, '16,
campus orator and president of the
S. C. A., will be the speakers who will
undertake to explain the nature of
this work to the freshmen assembled
at the banquet.
Wilson Rejects Proposal in 'Sub' Case
Washington, Feb. 22.-President
Wilson has emphatically rejected
proposals from members of his party
in Congress, which will relieve him
of the reponsibility of forcing an is-
sue with Germany over the new Ber-
lin submarine declaration. Such pro-.
posals took the form of suggested
legislation prohibiting American citi-
zens from traveling on armed mer-
chantmen.
The president rejected the proposals
without qualification.

Abolishment, said Mr. Edwards, is
generally impossible, individual action
and education are ineffectual in reach-
ing the whole body of citizens in a
community or state, and pacific dis-
regard is foolhardy. Preparedness for
defense, he pointed out, is the only

effective alternative remaining.
Leroy Scanlon, '16L, president of
the senior law class, presided at the
services. Earl V. Moore, '12, of the
university school of music, played an
organ prelude consisting of the "Joan
of Arc March," by DuBois, and John-
ston's "Even Song," and the accom-
paniment to the singing of "America"
at the close.

Turks Belittle Russ-An Victory
London, Feb. 22.-The Turkish war
office admitted tonight the fall of Er-
zerum into the hands of the Russians.
Constantinople asserts that that the
Turkish army was withdrawn to the
west without losses, for military rea-
sons. Only fifty guns were left in
Erzerum and these were detroyed, the
statement says, adding that the town
is not a fortress as the forts'have no
military value.
