The Bogey of Culture
And, finally, there is the bogey of
cvulture. Culture, or learning, for its
own sake, is on the defensive among
us., We actually boast of the success
with which we are able to render our-
selves impervious to cultural influ-
ences, and sometimes apologize for
occasionally abandoning ourselves to
study. The distinctive function of a
college. is the train:ag o% the intellect.
"Mixing" may or may not be a good
thing. It depends very largely on the
character of the ingredients that enter
into the process.
And so I admonish you, fellow stu-
dents, not to permit these traditional
bogeys to blind you to the real pur-
pose of a college education, which is
to develop in you the power to sense
out wheat is superior in thought and
action. Be true to your primary duty
as students, which is to meet with
honest endeavor the responsibilities
which the classroom imposes upon.
