LIBERTY ST. I Engineering .and pharmic indoor baseball teams came out on top in the second night of actual play in the in- terclass series, the junior and sopho- more boiler-makers winning their games from the architects and soph lits respectively, while the junior lits were the victims of the pill-makers. Kesler and Sayles were the best performers in the opening game of the evening, and Sayles pushed over the coup of thae game when he slammed out a three-bagger. The final score stood 8 to 4 in favor of the pharmics. Shay and Gardiner were the rea- sons that the engineers won from the architects, and pushed over an 11 to 4 victory. The bright bit of the even- ing was when Northrup and Krieger pulled off a fast double play for the home-builders. The final game of the evening was the closest of the trio, the soph engi- neers winning in an 8 to 5 game with the soph lits. Hibber and Pilgrim were the batteries for the winners, and were opposed by Shearer and Stadeker. Coach "Steve" Farrell devoted most 2f the time during yesterday's work- out of the track athletes in Waterman Tymnasium to instructing new men in handling the pole and in how to get Jormn in vaulting the cross bar. There were almost an even dozen men out. eager to learn how to clear the bar. When "Bo" Wilson failed to returr to the university this fall, he left ,,uite a hole in his department for the coach to fill. When asked about the prospects for a good vaulter for this year's squad, "Steve" said, "We haven't a real good one, but we're doing to make one." While regretting the fact that Wilson, who was a eon- sistent. point, winner for Michi gan dur- ing the last track season, did not re- turn, he appeared optimistic over the prospect although he does not expect to uncover an inter-collegiate cham- pion al ready-made. It would seem that the outdoor track is none too popular these cold days. Occasionally an enterprising youth can be caught approaching a two- minute gait around the oval. MA RRI ED BY PROXY, WIDOW GETh PENSION IN FRANCE Paris, Dec. 11.-Is she a widow, or isn't she? That is the question that has been troubling the Paris authori- ties for the past week. On November 17 a young Parisienne was married to Sergeant Joseph Conduche. The mar- riage was performed by proxy. On December 1 she was officially inform- ed that Sergeant Conduche had been killed at Souchez on September 28, several weeks before the marriage. A few. days ago a prominent Michi- gan athlete hailed us on the campus and said that he had a story on Maul- betsch which he believed was good' enough' to print. He went on to relate the following It seems that a few days ago "Jack" Benton purchased a wedding ring fron: an Ann Arbor jewelry store. The young lady that made the sale report- ed the same to "Johnnie" Maulbetsch, and "Maullie" at once asked Benton about it. "Jack" denied that the ring was his, saying that he had merely purchased it for a friend who didn't have enough nerve to buy it himself, as he was afraid that the story might get around. This sounded fairly plausible, and Benton's friends accepted it at face value. But "Johnnie" didn't. "And would you believe it," laughed our informant, old "Maullie" still be- lieves that "Jack" is going to get married. it's a goodjoke on our new football captain all right, and you ought to spring it." However, since marriage and wed- ding rings are more or less delicate propositions we let the matter slide for a few days and now subsequent developmeits show that Maulbetsch was right after all. Thus, those who have an aversion for hearing this "I-told-you-so" phrase are c autioned against hailing 'Maullie. He'll spring it sure, and with cause. The man that gave us the "inside tip" probably won't "meet" Maul- betsch for a week. R EII7ANN GOES To IOWA CITYt "ichig"a . )I. C.. 'resident Speaks at Uniiversity of Iowa Louis C.
