Frayer, of the his- tory department, speaking at the se- nior lit smoker last night, asserted that liberal education in this country may rapidly become the farce that men in technical schools already charge it with becoming. He further says that in the United States our technical departments are head high over the literary depart- ments. In order to change this the literary student will have to put in more hours of work. However, no form of education is so qualified to solve public problems as the kind of education that the literary department is trying to give. The smoker program was intro- duced with a piano-banjo duet by Dean J. DeButts, '18E, and Halstead Cot- tington, 19. That body lost considerable of its prestige when Michigan severed its relations with its natural rivals, and to let one of its best remaining schools get loose would weaken it still more. Illinois is in a position to force the conference officials to sit up and take notice. Last fall it won the cham- pionship' and this season the Urbana boys were tied for first place with Minesota. Always it has been a big factor in baseball, and has'several times had one of the best nines in the conference. Prof. Hollister's Classes to Recite The classes of Prof. R. D. T.
