Three Vagrants Arrested
Three men, suspected of having
stolen goods in their possession, were
arrested Wednesday afternoon by of-
ficers from the sheriff's office.
Employes of the Mihigan Edison
Electric company had called up the
sheriff's office, saying that three sus-
picious looking characters had tried
to dispose of a quantity of dry-goods
at the plant. The men were soon taken
into custody.
On the way to the county jail one
of the men was seen to throw some
articles from the car, and it was
found that he had taken this means
of trying to dispose of a quantity of
apparently new shirts, stockings and
mittens.
At the jail the three men gave their
names as William Ryan, of Detroit,
James Burns, of Detroit, and John
Monahian, of Brooklyn. When asked
where they obtained the merchandise
they said that some one had given it
to them. They were 'arraigned 'be-
fore Justice William Doty yesterday
morning, and "sentenced to 30 days
each in the county jail for vagrancy.
Aged Resident Shots Himself
While sitting in a rocking chair at
his residence at 603 Cedar street on
Wednesday evening, August Handt, 70
years old, pulled the trigger of a shot-
gun poised between his legs, and near-
ly blew the left side of his face off.
He died at the University hospital
early yesterday morning.
Handt was a carpenter and lived
with his son Paul, who is employed
in a downtown mercantile establish-
ment. He had worked at his trade
until recently when gangrene had de-
veloped in his right foot. He was
told by his physician that it would be
necessary to amputate the affected
member in order to save his life, and
it is believed that this preyed upon
his mind until it caused him to com-
mit the fatal act.'
The shooting was committed about
8:30 in the evening in the absece of
his son. Neighbors hearing the re-
port, rushed into the house and found
the man sitting in his chair, blood
streaming profusely from a large
wound on the left side of his face.
A physician was sent for ad short-
ly after his arrival Handt was taken
to the University hospital.
It was later learned that the dead
man had deposited his will about a
week ago in the office of the probate
judge, and this makes it almost cer-
tain that he had contemplated his act
for some time.
