REPEAT MAWON LECTURE
IN YPSILANTI AUDI)TORIUIM TO-~
IHT
Elditor The Michigan Daily:
I want to ;rove notice through your
columns that the lecture to be given
at the Pease auditorium in Ypsilanti
this evening by IDr. Hunsbergr, i
essentially tho, same lecture that was
delivered by Sir Dougas Mawson last
year in the Hill auditorium. The beau-
tiful slides arc identical, as are the
motionl reels, though these have been
augmented by new ones. The geology
department' is recommending that so
far as possibie its students try to at-
tend the lecture. Arrangements have
been made by which a secial car cv 1
the D. U. R. will leave Ann Arbor at
7:10 o'clock for the (door of the audi-
tcoriu, and, returni jig will leave ini-
niediately after the lecture. The hour
of the lecture is , :'J0 o'clok and the
admnission fee 25 cents.

Washington, D. C., Nov. 4.-Brand
YWhitloek, United States minister to
Belgium, has been gra~tA leave of
absence tfor two months and is re-
turning to the United States at once
on the Holland-A>merican liner Ryn-
(lafl.
It ,gas said at the state department
that Mr. Whitock has suffered a com-
3lplete iiervous breakdown as the re-
suit of the strain he has been under
since the outbreak of the war in u-
rope. It was stated that his return
hone at this time had nothing to do
wvith the Cavell case, concerning which
the G erm n press showed consider-
able irritation and ev en aserted tha
Mr. Whitlock had been sent home. In
ether quarters the opinion prevails,
however, that Mr. Whilock's return
has been hastened by this incident.
11rot'. H-enry 'ban Dyke, the United
States minister to the Netherlands,
(uestion ed regarding the rumor pub-
lished that the German government
had requested the recall of Brand
Whitlock, the American minister to
Belgium, said:
"It is absolutely untrue that Min-
ister Whitock has been recalled from
Brussels. If hie should go home it
I would be simpi y on, account of his
hecalth or to take a vacation, to which
he is entitled under the regulations,
after a difficult and faithful service
1which he has performed with the
highest credit."

T1o INSTRUCT VALE'S ELEVEN
New Haven, Nov. 3.-Six graduate
coahes reported at the field yesterday
and work was started at once in re-
rganizing the university team. The
practice consisted entirely of individ-
ual work, the squad being divided in-
to groups.
Van Nostrand, last year's freshman
quarterback, has passed off all Ili
conditions, and has joined the squad.
The coaches are working on' Savage
Neville, Smith and Van Nostrand i
particular, and practically all the
backs as kickers.
Guernsey's shoulder is very much
improved and it is very possible that
he will be able to play in the Prince-
ton game. Black will be in shape for
the Brown game and may be used to
bolster the line.
In spite of a statement made to thc
contrary in the New York Tribune
yesterday, Frank Hinkey is still head
coach and will continue to be. Sevlin
has not been asked to take the posi
tion and it is not known whether he
will even be asked to take charge at
the field.
PENNSYLVANIA VALUES SPIRIT
XOPRE THTAN SECRET PRACTICE
Philadelphia, Nov. 3.-The football
coaches established an innovation yes-
terday by their announcement that
hereafter secret practice will be dis-
continued. Simultaneous with this de-
cision plans were formulated for the
re-creation of spirit at Pennsylvania.
Starting today, every undergraduate
will be expected to turn out at the
stands, and from 4:00 o'clock on to
cheer the team at practice. In the
past, when the entire student body
has so united, the team has caught the
infection of loyal enthusiasm and
risen to the crises facing them.
It was with this fact in mind that
the coaches decided to abandon secret
practices. Although scouts from other
elevens cannot be discriminated
against, the coaches are unanimous in
beliesing that the tonic effect of un-
dergraduate backing will offset the
loss of secrets stolen by scouts.
