IIiTORY OF FRENCH VERSE
Prof. Hugo P. Thieme, of the French
department, is now at work on the
proofs of a "History of French Versi-
fication," which he has written, and
which will be published in Paris.
The publication of Professor
Thieme's history was delayed by rea-
son of the fact that the original pub-
lisher proved to be a German, who
was forced to leave France at the out-
break of the war. It was necessary
to have this man's permission before
a bona ride French publisher could be
engaged.

A MATTER OF COURTESY
Today ushers in the first game of
?Michigan's 2 915-1916 athletic program.
The early season dopesters hav~e re-
lieved t hemflselves of many prophecies.
Sport writers big. and little have had
their fling at the chances of the Wol-
verines and their wily coach. E~ven
Hlurry-Up himself, accordling to one
of our D~etroit contemporaries, has
admitted that it looks like a fair
Michigan year. The men have done
their best, and on first thought there
seems little more that we can ask of
the squad that " is responsible for
MIChiganl's athletic prestige. But
there is one small thing we cannot
overlook.
In years gene by, our opponents on
Ferry Field, whether winners or
losers, v have gathered in a little knot
immediately after the last whistle and
cheered their erstwhile antagonists.
In years gone by, the fast emptying
stands have thrown back a hollow
echo. The team and rooters, in deep
satisfaction or proportionate gloom,
being too much taken up with their
own thoughts, hurry off the hield, not
stopping to bother with one of the lit-
tle things that go so far toward mak-
ing intercollegiate relations worth
wvhi]e.
BY WAY OF EXPLANATION
We have a critic thtis,, year who
]Knows his job, and who is niot at all
backward about telling us of our
shortcomings. We are' amateurs in
this newspaper' work and the best of
intentions can't offset this, nor as-
suage the ruffled feelings o1 a man
whose name and initials have been
hopelessly garbled in the news col-,
urnns. We rely for our authority on
the Students' Directory and the Fac-
ulty Directory, neither of which, we
have learned to our sorrow, are in-
fallible.
Prof. J. A. Bursley Returns .Home
Prof. .1. A. Blursley has returned
front a two ygars' leave of absence to
take up his duties in the Engineer-
ing college. i s new duties will
consist of a number of courses in in-
dustrial and scientific shop manage-
turent., He has been engaged during
thea lsttwo years in installing and
inspecting the Taylor system of sci-
entific shop management in a num-i
her of eastern business concerns.

Physical education required of sec-
ond as well as first-year students is
an innovation introduced by Miss
Alice Evans, physical director of Bar-
bour gymnasium. Though it takes ef-
feet at once, it is not retroactive, hence
entering sophomores are not included
in the requirement. Classes will be
held twice instead of three times a
week as heretofore. The spring and
fall 'work will consist of tennis, arch-
ery, hockey, and walking, and appoint-
ments for physical and medical exam-
inations should be arranged for at
once.
Elective physical education, consist-
ing of advanced gymnasium, dancing
and all sports, will be given on Friday
at 4 o'clock throughout the year.
Those intending to enroll should do
so at onfce and arrange for a heart
and lung examination before Octo-
ber 13.
A playground course, consisting of
training and material in games and
dancing, will be given this year .dur-
ing the period of indoor work, from
November to April. The spring term
will include practical work in the
schools. The class will probably be
held on Friday at 2 o'clock throughout
the year. This course will give train-
ing to those who wish to take up pub-
tic school playground work during the
summer.
