STTNG" SAYS U. OF M. BOAT LIVERY CHARGES MONOPOtLTS- TIC PRICES Editor, The Michigan Daily: We need another canoe house. : We need some competition in the canoe livery business. If the city will not erect a municipal boat house--and it probably won't-why can't the stu- dents and faculty organize a co-bpera- tive association? Or let the iinivEr- sity of Michigan Boat Club extend its activities and show cause for exis- tence. Any one of these plans is feasible. I favor the co-operative as- sociation. In my opinion, the present manage- ment of the so-called U. of M. Boat Livery is charging monopolistic prices. A good canoe can be bought for $40.00. When purchased in large numbers, canoes are probably bought for less. I contend that $2.00 a day rental for an outfit worth even $40.00 is an unjust price. 1 contend that a rental of $10.00 per year for the privilege of storing a private canoe in a pine shed is ridi- culous. I claim that a charge of $5.00 for an old canoe worth perhaps $15.00 for the Lakeland trip is outrageous. There are no heavy overliead charges in conducting a canoe liv- ery. The business is housed in cheaply-constructed buildings on a site of no great value. No high-priced help is necessary. While it may be argued that this is a seasonal business, the season in Ann Arbor lasts about five months. The winter charges for maintaining the boat houses are practically nil. And the high rental from the private canoe owner goes on through tfhe winter. One of our best outdoor sports is being exploited at our unjust expense. While it may be too late to start any- thing before Commencement, let's at least get busy with plans for next year. A little constructive effort and we will easily solve this problem. 1. M. STUNG.
