Beekmnan, 4252 MILITARY DRILL TO SE ORAGGEDIND UPOLITICS Wessellus, Republican Candidate for Governor, Will Fight Against "Bru- tal Science of War" Firing the opening gun in the strug- gle for gubernatorial office, Sybrant Wesselius, candidate on the republican ticket, has attacked Frank B. Leland in an open letter, for Leland's support of military training at the University of Michigan. The letter contains a statement of the expense of the University to the state, and wishes to know the reasons whereby the regents can foist such a scheme on the taxpayers without the latter having a chance to give their approval of the plan. After stating that the Board of Re- gents intends to fasten upon the uni- versity a system whereby young men may be skilled in the "brutal science of war" that would result in perpet- uating such a system just now when all the nation hopes for peace, Mr. Wesselius states that he intends to take up the matter with the taxpay- ers and make of the issue one of the planks of his platform by which he hopes to raise himself to the gov- ernor's chair.
