ABUSES OF PETITIONS.
It is a question whether or not the
present ban on electioneering is jus-
tifiable or desirable. There can be no
question that, once having been out-
lawed, electioneering should not be
restored until discussion shows it to
be advisable. The soph medics, heed-
lessly enough, set student self-govern-
ment back several years by their re-
cent reaction; equally thoughtless ac-
tion on the part of other classes may
call forth all the old abuses of unre-
strained campaigning.
The petition is an ally of the so-
called peanut politics faction and its
compromising use is a step towards
the past. Men are nominated by peti-
tion, and in the quest of signers for
the petition, soliciting of votes is car-
ried on.tSometimesgthis Is uninten-
tional. But, whether done scheming-
ly or innocently, the petition influ-
ences the result unfairly. When a man
puts his name to the paper which
places another man in nomination, he
feels more or less bound to vote for
that man at the subsequent election.
If the results obtained by this sys-
tem of petitioning were always plot-
ted for, it would be easy enough to
wipe it all out. As it is, the right of
petition stands in the anomalous po-
sition of both aiding and deterring
just ends. If a substitute is adopted,
it must not only evade the unscrupu-
lous politician, but must also insure
that slates may not be rushed through,
without later remedy, in class elec-
tions. It is all a question which the
council might well consider.
President Fabnce, of Brown, says
that in the last 10 years just as many
students have been demoralized by the
automobile as by alcohol.

Majestic Vaudeville
Rhymed bits from mother Goose fea-
tured an unusual act on last night's
bill. The five De Vals did some aerial
acrobatic work that induced even the
leave-early contingent to keep its
seats. The show has its share of the
inevitable rough spots.
