Address The Amnerican fln. Tobacco Co., Roomn1401 111 Fifth Avenue, 14Y. o0munic&fin 1 editor, The Michigan Daily:- Petitions have been circulated in several classes, asking that the board in control of athletics alter the rule governing summr baseball. These in- teresting documents have been signed by many who signed merely to please; chiefly by "good fellows"; but by few if any, who are actually familiar with the situation. Like everything else in our lay, ath- letics are to be dealt with by special- ists, by men who are thoroughly fa- miliar with the conditions as they at present exist. What, then, are the facts? Michigan is barred, from the Confer- ence. And now, these enthusiastic and over-zealous gentlemen would have us ostracized by the East, our on- ly recourse at present. They labor un- der the impression that, were Michi- gan to come out with a stand for sum- mer baseball, other colleges would fol- low. This is an unfounded impres- sion. Judge Murfin, Mr. Bartelme, Mr. Hibbard and Mr. Emmons made a tour of the Eastern 'colleges for the ex- press purpose of determining what their attitude to Michigan would be were summer baseball permitted here. Their findings arc these:-some would under no consideration meet us in any branch of intercollegiate sport; while others, if they continued to play ball with us, would regard the fixture in the same light as they would games with strictly professional teams. The authenticity of these statements can- not be doubted. And no plunging of Y. M. C. A. reformers, ignorant of the situation, can alter the facts. We hope, therefore, that when such worthless petitions are placed b7efore you, you will remember that there is a thoroughly informed body of men capable of dealing with the ,situation, and that you will promptly refuse to be drawn into support of an impracti- cable policy.
