T. Fishleigh Thatcher Rea J. J. Herbert SUNDAY, MAY Iif, 1915. Night Editor-Verne E. Burnett THE 5,900 AND THE 100. Approximately 100 out of 6,000 stu- dents on the Michigan campus take an active part in Varsity athletics. The other 5,900 are content to sit in the stands and add their mite toward vic- tory through the medium of rooting. Those 5,900 owe more to athletics than the paltry "vocal exercises" in which they engage. The 100 give un- sparingly of their strength, their: brains and their time. They need, and they deserve, more from their fellows. Coach Fielding H. Yost has pointed the way for the 5,900. Each year he has sent out a plea to the student body to assist the Varsity athlete in his scholastic work. By a few his peti- tion has beenanswered, but the vast majority of that 5,900 are content to stay in the background when some concrete example of their loyalty to Michigan athletics is asked. It is the duty of every Michigan stu- dent, no matter what his station on the campus, whether he be a brilliant scholar or merely the plodder, to add his quota to aid the Varity athlete. This athlete will do his share, but his very position on the 'campus, the time he must spend outside his study room, demands this help which Yost asks. Some men are like dogs who lie around for hours storing up energy enough to enable them to jump upand chase something they don't want. The sound of an alarm clock on Sun- day morning is as much an anachron- ism as the reverberation of manly tones in a sorority after hours., Many persons who go visiting have trouble distinguishing between the ev- idences of endurance and of hospitali- ty. The peanut venders and restaurant- ers don't mind it when a game is so drawn-out as to interfere with meals. Why not have a ruling that anyone getting a fractured nose in an inter- class game wins his numerals? Straws may come and straws may go, but sloppy pop distributors go on forever. I I Unitarian Church Unitarian Church At 10:30, sermon by Mr. Loring on "What About the Command to Resist Not Evil?" At 11:45 Miss Edith Atkins gives a talk on "Socialism," before the Social Service Class. At 6:30 the Young People's Society meets on the grounds of Prof. Lang- ley, 2037 Geddes Ave., if the weather is warm and pleasant, otherwise- at the church, for a Picnic Supper and dis- "cussion of "Business or Profession," led by Mr. Jennings and Mr. Hirth. Many a stude scouted the streets yester morn before springing his straw. Too bad the Varsity won't be here to see the Daily-Gargoyle game. What would happen if the Ann Arbor motorman should decide to strike? Got one of those things that goes with an Evinrude yet? 0 Have you already weighed in for the big wade-in?
