No charge will be made'for admis- sion to the football smokers after this, according to an officer of the Union. The announcement indicates a cred- itable tendency to notice what the public thinks. The average member does not believe that he gets $2.50 worth out of his membership fee. If there was not heroic campaigning for members every fall, the Union could not boast an enrollment in the thous- ands. It is sorry business to have to put loyalty to the Union on a commer- cial basis, but the fact remains that students are not going on forever pay- ing a fee which only licenses them to pay other charges. There are some things that nobody expects to be made free. Take the dances, for .example. On the other hand, the smoker and vaudeville show are affairs of such general interest, and their cost is so nominal, that it is but proper to have them come in under the initial $2.50 charge. When the Union gets its million dollars, includ- ing an endowment of almost one-third of that amount, it can probably afford to sell first-class opera tickets for less than $2.00, too. When a wandering lit asked the pur- pose of the traveling carriage over the naval tank, a rascal engineer told him, it was a ripple-counter. Every vacation time presents two saddening ordeals: getting together enough money for a ticket, and then parting with it to the A. A. road. Get ready to answer that corner- store query when you get home: "Well, boy, what have you learned down at collitch this year?" A pussy-footed doctor seems to be the only person capable of stopping one John Maulbetsch in his hurtling career. Seen Railroad Jack seated in the li- brary making out his memo cards of great men and memorable events? Over 50 university women tried out yesterday afternoon for parts in the classic dancing festival which is to be held under the direction of Miss Alice Evans, as part of the annual women's field day, late in May. In response to numerous requests for another tryout, Miss Evans will meet women who wish to try out and were unable to come Monday, at 4:00 o'clock this afternoon in Barbour gym- nasium.' At this time the myth which the dancing will interpret, will be ex- plained, and the groupings further as- signed. * * * The senior women's play will be chosen from among several now being considered, during spring vacation, and parts will be distributed to the successful women among the 60 or more tryouts, so that rehearsals may begin immediately after spring vaca- tion, according to Marion McPherson, '15, chairman of the committee. The play will be given, as usual, during commencement week. The annual basketball banquet will be held this afternoon at 6:00 o'clock at Barbour gymnasium: All universi- ty women who are interested are invit- ed to attend. Tickets are 35 cents a plate.
