The trouble started early in the evening when 50 town rowdies col- lected near a grade school house and began to accost and beat up passing students. Following the first en- counter four students were left par- tially conscious on the ground where police found them. In a few minutes 1,000 university men were gathered in the lower cam- pus and moved on the business part of the city searching streets and al- leys for the gangs of city boys. A free for all fight between town and gown took place. By this time the police were alive to the situation and a motor patrol loaded with bluecoats descended upon the melee. Four students and three town rowdies had been dragged into the wagon when it was surrounded by the mob. The driver put on full power and bored through the mass knocking several to the pavement.
