Members of the board in control of athletics were called to account in this column yesterday. They were asked to do something to remedy the present condition which requires Varsity base- ball men to perjure themselves. No action was taken. Most of the time was spent in trying to relieve the pinch of the shoe of criticism by impugning the motives and sincerity of the accuser. The. bitterness with which alumni and faculty members met the censure on their inaction is almost without prec- edent, even though it is to be hoped that one member's threat to take the matter of further "unwarranted charg- es" before President Hutchins is not typical of the lengths to which the board might go. The Daily will stand by its guns. It did not accuse individual members of the board of knowing of specific ex- amples of ineligibility. It says sim- ply, as it did yesterday, that existing eligibility conditions are deplorable, and that there are so many flagrant and notorious violations of tlfe present absurd rules, that members of the board must know of what is going on, at least in general. Nobody is accused of active dishonesty, in allowing mat- ters to continue unremedied. The state- ment must stand, however, that the members of the .board are responsible for not cleaning up conditions which they know are a reproach to the uni- versity. A correspondent signing .himself "'17" asks why the grounds depart- ment does not turn on the water. Cross, of the department of fine arts, will give an illustrated lecture before the next meeting of the Michigan Dames society at 8:00 o'clock tomorrow night in Memorial hall. The subject of the talk will be "How to Judge a Picture." NOTICE. At its April meeting, the board in control of student publications will choose a business manager and man- aging editor for 1915 Students' Direc- tory. It is the policy of the board in filling the positions on the publications under its control to award them on the basis of merit to those who have served in minor positions on the pub- lication to which the positions pertain. It sometimes happens, however, that no one who ,has served on the publi- cation during one year is eligible or capable of filling one of the leading positions thereon for the ensuing year. When either of these sets of circum- stances arises the board finds it neces- sary to consider outside candidates. This notice should not be considered as an intimation that either of these situations will arise this year. All applications for these positions should be in the hands of Prof. F. N. Scott on or before March 31 in or- der to be considered. Each application should contain a statement of the ex- perience of the applicant and should be accompanied by the applicant's eli- gibility card and any letters of recom- mendation which he may have.
