Freshmen are being advised by fac- ulty men in one department this year in a manner that is more than per- functory. Freshmen advisory systems have been in service for several sea- sons, but it is doubtful if their support- ers ever exceeded their critics. Re- luctance to take advice combined with hesitancy about imparting it, due to the anticipated reluctance, have been obstacles in the past. The freshmen on one side of the desk and the profes- sor on the other have rather doubted each other, and both have wondered if they possessed any real sympathy of interest or whether they were only go- ing through the by-play of a system. At best, the- advisory system is a substitute for getting faculty men and students together informally. Ten minutes of sociable discourse in the home of a member of the faculty would give some freshmen a more sane view of college atmosphere than any num- ber of consultation hours. But such hospitality is impossible on a broad scale. The only solution seems to be for the instructor to im- press upon the student the sincerity of his good-will through convention alized meeting. Facilities for bring- ing this about efficiently are improv- ing. When timorous about Ann Arbor drinking water, it is always reassurig to reflect that Dean Vaughan considers it about the purest in the country. One difference between a senior and a freshman is that the former knows which is north and south in Ann Ar- bor, Speculative minds are busy figuring whether the Students' Directory or the first snow will arrive earliest. Traffic officers to guide students through the bicycle parade on the diag- onal walk are suggested. Gaping townspeople fit in a peppery mass meeting like India ink in a foun- tain pen. Professor James P. Bird, of the en- gineering department, will, speak to university women on "Recent Adven- tures in Europe," at 4:30 o'clock, this afternoon, in Newberry hall. However, it seems that the peace and dignity of the com- monwealth is to be again disturbed by the publishing of the annual indict- ment for non-support against the stu- dent body and others. Why not make it optional with the band members to use their $20 or $30, which is due them for their services at the end of the year, toward defraying their expenses on the annual Fall trip and thus do away with an issue which had supposedly been brought to a close last fall, when it was announced that a sufficient sum for the mainten- ance of the band would be annually awarded?
