The general library is to be com- mended for its efficiency of operation under trying conditions. Minor criti- cisms there are, of course, but when these are traced down, they usually prove to be founded on practically ir- remediable draw-backs. Inexperienced help is hired, in a number of instances, evidently for the sake of economy, and in order to supply work for students. Then, too, the inadequacy of equip- ment plays a part in hampering effi- ciency, if appearances may be trusted. The substantial remedy will proba- bly take the form of an improved building, whether it is ever feasible to employ trained assistants altogether or not. But something may be done now. Delays at the desk call forth the most objections. These are largely oc- casioned by the ignorance of the pat- ron as to the system used at the libra- ry. What to do to get a certain book is not such a simple matter as those in charge may imagine. More publicity regarding the "how" of using the li- brary to advantage would be appreci- ated. More than one student is running around with a crystal-less watch wait- ing to go home and put it on the fam- ily bill. There is the usual number who in- sist that they never did want to make Tau Beta Pi anyway. The bitterest thing is the bill that they put in the bottom of those little baskets. Boarding house indications point to profuse laying on the part of local hens. One contrib advises copyrighting this column, to ward off Life, et cet. Professional authorities on attention Majestic Theater. Steindel brothers, playing the cello, violin and piano were easily the lead- ers on this week's bill at the Majestic. Their recital of operatic, classical and popular pieces might well grace a musical program of larger pretensions. The Neffsky troupe of Russian singers and whirlwind dancers, offer a novelty not often seen on vaudeville programs. Bert Kenney and E. Booth Platt, black- face comedians have a skit that is productive of much laughter. A com- edy tight wire act, and a song and dance round out one of the best shows in weeks. Prizes at the Women's League fancy dress party Saturday evening, were awarded to the sophomore class, .for. the cleverest class stunt, a dance of well-known advertising figures, and to Doris Robinson, '15, for the prettiest, Catherine Reighard, '15, for the clev erest, and Beatrice Lambrecht, '16, for the funniest costumes. Adams House, 216 North State street, won the cup for the most cleverly costumed house group, with their patriotic costumes. Other noteworthy costumes are includ- ed in a long list of honorable mention. * * * First aid to the injured, and the rud- iments of practical nursing, will be the subjects of the demonstrations to be given in Newberry hall at 4:00 o'clock, on the next three Thursday af- ternoons by Dr. Elsie S. Pratt and two assistants. University women interested in the course, are asked to register at New- berry hall at once, as only a limited iumber can be accommodated at the demonstrations. * * * Prof. George L. Jackson, of the de- partment of education, will speak on "The Strength and the Limitations of the School in Vocational Education" at the regular meting of the Girls' edu- cational club at 7:30 this evening in Newberry hall.
